The Role
It was a good first job experience. I had several tasks to do and got an opportunity to shadow people from different departments. People were nice and willing to discuss their jobs. I would recommend it to other students, particularly if you have an interest in finance or invesment banking.
People were nice and friendly, and made me feel like I was part of the team. They were all willing to answer my questions or ask me questions about what I was doing. However, my tasks were pretty independent from those of my colleagues so we didn't interact that much.
My manager was nice and willing to answer my questions, but was busy/away for most of my internship, so most of the support actually came from other people. Still I felt supported enough to do my job and for future interns I would recommend to say something if you feel lost, especially at the beginning.
There were gaps between my tasks which resulted in periods where I was pretty bored at work. If you are an intern and such moments happen to you, I would recommend shadowing people or going on the internal learning platform, which has pretty good resources. Overall the work-life balance was ok, I never left after 6 pm.
I feel like I could have been given more responsibility, however, as an intern, I guess it was enough.
I feel like I mostly developed soft skills such as teamwork, networking, communication skills etc. I was a tech intern, but in terms of technical skills, I don't think mine have improved a lot, the work was not that challenging from this perspective, however, this greatly varies on your project/team, some other interns had really cool ones, so it's a matter of luck.
The Company
People were friendly and helpful, although fairly busy. Most of them would be happy to have a coffee with you if you want to learn more about what they do. I didn't feel stressed or under too much pressure.
The first few days I spent setting up everything on my computer, which I guess could have been done in advance to the internship. Other than that, everything ran pretty smoothly and I didn't have any trouble.
There is an internal learning platform with good resources, although personally I prefer other online ones. There were also a couple of training sessions of events where you could develop either soft/technical skills, although most of them were targeted at full-time employees.
Company Parties/Events
Healthcare/Dental
It is a good company to work for and if you have an interest in finance and investment banking than this is definitely a place you should consider. Personally I would like to explore other areas as well so I will not be returning, although most of us were offered a graduate placement for next year.
The Culture
There were several opportunities for socialising, and we did make friends among ourselves. They did a great job, my only complaint would be that some of the locations were a bit small and we often felt too crammed together.
It is London, so it's not cheap. I walked to work and that saved some money; the food at the canteen was also cheaper than most place in the area (that is if you are not bringing you own food, which of course would be cheaper). We were given some money at the beginning for reallocation.
N/A for me, but it's London so there is a lot to do.
There are volunteering opportunities and 'societies'. As interns, those weren't heavily advertised to us, but we did have one volunteering day.
