    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was a great experience. I learnt a lot and met some great people. The work I was set was challenging and interesting, and I was given plenty of opportunity to shadow and network fellow colleagues, both that I organised (which people were happy to accept) and at internship events and socials.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt extremely valued, immediately being welcomed into the team. The projects you work on are real things that have an impact on the team. Consequently, everyone is happy to assist as needed (especially my manger) and take a genuine interest in what you are working on. My team also asked me lots of questions so they could continue the work after I had gone, and suggested features to further help them.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was excellent, always happy to help with both my work and general career advice. He also focused on teaching me transferrable skills and methodologies for any work, not just the precise ones for my team. There is also a 'buddy' system for any support you feel uncomfortable asking your manager/supervisor for.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My main project was far larger than could be completed in one internship, but the amount of progress I was expected to make was very fair (with the remainder handed onto the current team when I left). Due to this I always had work, but was it was never extreme. Furthermore, when waiting for approvals, etc. this was supplemented with side projects or I enjoyed the chance to network and shadow other colleagues/teams

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • You are given a lot of responsibility and treated the same as any other employee. I was in charge of my project and often left to work out the best way to go about certain aspects (of course I could ask for assistance if I wanted to). My manager organised weekly checkups to monitor my progress and provide feedback, but I was responsible for my work.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I don't think my internship will have much impact on my degree studies, but it has been extremely helpful for my future career. I learnt a lot more about how software is developed and managed in the real world and also received very useful career advice and guidance. It has also helped me choose what career I want to go into post university.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • This greatly depended on the team and location you are assigned to, with some being very sociable and others more serious. Some interns became quite informal with their team, whilst others were more work focused (but still friendly!). My floor was only technology employees, which seemed more relaxed than other departments.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future employment prospects are very appealing. The internship was great and I heard excellent things about the graduate scheme and how much J.P. Morgan is investing in young talent. On the final day of the intership you have an offer communication meeting, in which you find if you successfully achieved an offer for the graduate scheme or not.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • 5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived and worked in London. London is very expensive, however you can stay in university student accomodation over the summer which was not terrible. Socialising was expensive, but that really depends how much you want to spend. Also, the internship pay was very fair so money was not an issue.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • J.P. Morgan has many "Business Resource Groups" that organise a variety of events. Some of these are targetted at interns and graduates, for example I attended a quiz and drinks for interns and grads only, others are for anyone. There are also sports clubs which allowed interns to sign up to as well.
