The Role
I found that it was very enjoyable. Worked with a large range of people of different backgrounds - where the vast majority were excellent sources of knowledge allowing for me to learn a lot. Also got to work on a number of different projects which used different areas of Computer Science.
Felt that despite being an intern that I was part of the team and that my opinion was valid. Due to the agile nature of team it meant I was taking part in the stand-ups and retros. Really found it easy to work together with my colleagues. The hot swappable desks meant that I could work beside the most relevant people.
Everyone I met was very receptive to questions. Had lots of meetings to explain the work along with "the big picture" as well so that there was background knowledge that was communicated as well. For technical knowledge I could also ask for help from supervisors who were receptive. They also appreciated taking the initiative and making sure that I was self-studying during any slower moments.
Work level fluctuated, some days were working all day with just enough time to take a lunch break others there was more free(ish) time which I used to self-study on tech skill that were new to me. My manager was very open to requests for more work if there was nothing to do. Was never too busy, never had to stay too late.
I felt like I was given a suitable level of responsibility, and by the end of the internship was being treated like any other developer on the team. Earlier on I worked with another intern on projects before been given my own independent work - I felt this worked well and was never too out of depth (only just enough that I felt suitably challenged).
Absolutely picked up skills that are vital for the real world. From technology (e.g. frameworks) that are used in industry to being able to improve my soft skills in a variety of work situations. A lot of skills seemed less important for my degree where the work we do is not quite carried out in the same way.
The Company
Enjoyable, and not as serious as I expected but lots of work still got done.
Near perfect. Many interns participate in this program and you can tell.
Fairly minimal company organised training.
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
Healthcare/Dental
I have a offer for the software engineering graduate program and intend to take it up.
The Culture
There were some company organised socials and many networking events - some were outside of working hours others were more serious during work time. I personally made friends with a number of fellow interns and felt that I got on with every intern I interacted with -everyone was friendly and professional.
This was an internship located in Bournemouth, so reasonably priced to go out and about. Food was reasonably cheap, although some more touristy places near the coast were not. Accommodation I got through the local University which was about what I expected to pay to stay within halls, I was within a 40 minute walk or a bus ride from work too.
Didn't go on any nights out.
Lots of extra groups to join and events going on. Participated in a hackathon (yearly event) which was really enjoyable. Also played in a rounders tournament which was a good laugh. Did a corporate responsibility day which involved pine pulling at a nearby nature reserve which was a fun day out.
