The Role
My work internship at ARUP was filled with incredible opportunities within the building services sector. As my first insight into the industry I found the experience incredibly rewarding, I was given responsibility for a range of projects with the mechanical team. I also had the chance to go on three site visits.
ARUP has a great ethos in which the value of each employee is felt within the team. I do not believe there was any occasion where I was not thanked by someone for doing work to help them.
Though there was a decrease in workload towards the beginning of my placement I was kept busy by members of the mechanical team. I carried out research and basic jobs, whilst I was bored at times I appreciated the work load they provided.
Dependent on the day I ranged in busyness, however looking back on the last 10 weeks for the most part of my time here I have had a good workload.
I feel I was given a fair amount of responsibility during my time at ARUP considering my position. I worked individually on a couple of Stage one feasibility studies, and worked a long side many technicians and engineers to complete work.
The training I have received on different programmes such as Revit, CAD and Bluebeam will influence the way I complete my university work, I am now fully competent with these pieces of software and will use them to enhance my coursework in the near future. I have also gained the fundamental skills of working in an office and within a team to ensure the highest quality of work is sent out.
The Company
The office is very friendly, all activities outside and within the office are highly inclusive. I was made to feel part of the team.
I would not say that there was a particular 'set up' to the placement, however due to the nature of the work I do not believe that a structure necessarily needs to be implemented. I would recommend a possible Moodle page for vacation/ intern student to complete when they have nothing to do.
The office has been incredibly developmental from teaching me software to just being open to hear my questions.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
The graduate scheme here at ARUP is definitely appealing, I will 100% be applying to the scheme in the next academic year.
The Culture
The staff were very sociable with a beer in the pub offer most weeks. There was also other external activities in which I was invited to.
I am currently at the Nottingham office, I have lived here for 3 years now due to studying at the University of Nottingham therefore I know the cheap places. However in general it is reasonably price.
Again, after being here at university I know the nightlife- not that I have been up very late during these 10 weeks.
There was a fair few opportunities to socialize outside of work. The team was very welcoming in inviting me to the event that went on outside of work.
