The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at JP. I felt like I was able to contribute to the team I was on, as well as get involved with other projects. The HR team organised multiple events (professorial and social) to ensure we got to meet a wide range of people within the company.
The team I worked with was very welcoming and helpful. From the more senior developers I was able to learn a large amount of technical skills. I was able to contribute to all meetings and discussions, even meetings with more senior colleagues, and felt like my contributions were listened to and used.
I was able to discuss any issues or problems straight away, and he was good at providing feedback on my performance. We met weekly to have an official discussion which enabled us to discuss what I was doing well, and what I needed to do to improve or do better in order to get an offer.
Relatively busy on some days such as release, but I was always able to take my breaks and leave on time. I stayed late on a few occasions but completely out of my own choice and not for very long. I was never bored or had too little to do, as we had a backlog of features to work through, which meant I was always able to engage which challenging problems, and contribute positively to the team.
To start with the senior developers gave me more guidance and support, but towards once they were confident in my abilities I was given my own feature to develop from scratch. This enabled me to completely plan the feature, work with end-users and develop it all by myself, which was a lot of responsibility. However the team was there to support me if I ran into any issues.
I was able to put a lot of the theory I had learnt on my course into practice, and I was also able to learn a lot about multiple technologies and languages which will help my in my final year. I was even able to learn about how to more efficiently develop using built in ide features.
The Company
The atmosphere was good in the office. I feel that this will depend on location and floor, however my office was very friendly and cheery and I felt instantly accepted into the group. There was regularly food on offer for birthdays and things, and we met as a floor monthly to discuss any news and recognise achievements.
The internship was very well set up, with clear instructions on where to go, details of employment etc. The only issue I had was the on boarding process was quite lengthy, and involved dozens of emails over multiple months, some repeating previous information. I felt that this could have been better achieved through a job portal etc. Some information I received wasn't applicable to me, and some I couldn't even do, for example one required me to login before we had received any log in details. I feel that if a personal contact address had been provided it would have been much easier, as I never had a clear idea of who to contact if I had any issues, and some concerns I mentioned on the phone were never answered.
I received multiple training courses, and had access to many more for technological skills that I could access for free at any time. I was also able to go on two days out, one to a nature reserve and the other to an animal shelter, to volunteer and help the local community.

Great! I received an offer to come back after finishing my degree. I couldn't be more happy as I enjoyed almost everything on my placement, and I cannot recommend the company enough. On top of this the company has a clear structure for promotions and they reward employees very well!
The Culture
I was not able to participate in as many social activities as other placement students as I was living further away. However there were are about 60 of us in my location, and they regularly met up outside of work. I was able to attend 2 socials organised for the interns, 1 for my floor and 1 just for my team, all of which were great.
I am not too familiar with this, as I lived out of town and commuted to the office. However from what I am aware it was not particular cheap as it is a touristy area, but it was no where near as bad as places such as London or other big cities.
Again I commuted into the area so I never really went out, however the bars we went to for the socials were very good! I also hear a lot of positive things from other interns and friends who had been out in the town. I would like to go back to find out!
There were many opportunities. There was lots of volunteering events and social opportunities, as well as the opportunity within work to get involved with other projects, or to learn new skills you would not normally learn in you BAU. I was able to work on a side project during my internship, as well go along to multiple social and volunteering events.
