The Role
Amazing in terms of the amount of resources they put in, challenging work that really pushed your limits
Very much, people were willing to talk to interns and offer their help on the trading floor
They were always there when you needed help or guidance, as long as you had a go at it yourself already
Quite, difficult to balance the internship training and day to day work on the desk
Depends from desk to desk, but often the projects interns are given are important and matter, except that they tend to have longer time frames and aren't related to day to day running of the desk
Thinking, analytical skills and really how to behave in the workplace
The Company
Great - less aggressive and more collaborative than at other US banks.
Compared to other US investment banks, the programs there were much more structured, standardised compared to JP Morgan (and smoother onboarding too). A specific comment would be that in other programs, it was clear exactly how to be a good salesperson/researcher/trader and to know what to expect in a career with that firm. In some sense, I found this more laissez faire approach at JPM to be better - you get to be more entrepreneurial, find a style that suits you better etc.
Lots of resources in terms of both the overall program and on the desk. Overall program - lots of teach ins even after the first week of training, by people on the trading floor. Also lots of feedback given on intern trade idea presentations Desk - constant feedback on how you could do similar tasks better the next time round
Company Parties/Events
Healthcare/Dental
Scale and the ability to try new things within the firm seems to be quite appealing - lots of examples of both junior and senior people you see around you who've moved around a bit within the firm. Again, lots of resources put in for development which probably helps in the future
The Culture
Great part of it was that there were definitely team drinks/intern drinks that everyone went to of their own accord on Friday evenings, which was a much more intimate setting to get to know people. I guess towards the end (and near conversion) it wasn't as great in terms of panic and fear there, but probably not the worst it could go
London is expensive, a large part of pay goes towards rent and expensive food. Don't think that can be helped very much though - unless you stay in uni accommodation or something, it's difficult to save a lot given the rent mostly. Canary Wharf though is slightly cheaper than Central London
Nightlife doesn't exist in Canary Wharf during the weekend. Friday evening probably is the busiest because everyone's getting drinks
Everyone seemed pretty busy on their desks and in an internship it's harder to compared to a full time role, when you're trying to get the conversion. Occasionally you might end up not getting the full weekend too when you have an upcoming presentation - saw plenty of interns in over the weekend
