The Role
Really friendly team and enjoyed the work.
Very valued by colleagues - they gave very positive feedback to my work and help.
Fully supported throughout and was given information on the insights and workings of an engineering company.
Some days were busy and a few where team members were on holiday were very quiet. For the most part the days had a steady work flow.
I was mainly asked to prepare documents for bid proposals for projects and to contribute in meetings. All my work was reviewed with improvements given so overall I had only a small amount of responsibility. This worked well as doing a placement after first year of uni, I found I had little in depth experience so having little responsibility was good.
I have a more in depth knowledge of project management and how engineering projects work. I had to manage time effectively and juggle working on lots of different projects which will be useful in the future.
The Company
Hard working colleagues but very friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
All IT was sorted for my arrival and my supervisors had a vague plan of work to start with. With lots of team members on holiday it meant sometimes there wasn't a clear plan of work for me.
Due to the short duration of the placement I wasn't trained in detail in CAD software but the company and my colleagues made sure I was being informed of the relevant aspects of engineering on my projects.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
I would really like to do another short placement within Arup. It would be interesting to work in a different team to get a wider knowledge of the different engineering disciplines available in Arup.
The Culture
Most placement students were graduates or year placement students who started near the end of my placement so I didn't really get a chance to get to know anyone similar to my age.
I lived at home so no living costs
Because I stayed at home it was no different to normal
I went on a trip to Newport Velodrome that was organised by Arup workers which was a great experience.
