The Role
My internship very enjoyable this summer. The team is a good fit, learnt so much and working hours were very good, given the Markets division, i.e. minimum 10h a day and around 11-12h on average. I only came to work 2 Sundays (out of 8), compared to some intern friends who were coming in every weekend.
This is quite a tough question to answer. Some days, I was invisible on the desk, since my team was very busy. However, they tried to make me feel at home through lunches/drinks and general chit chat when they found time. To be valued you also need to have responsibility, I think, which is not much at this early internship stage.
Being in a team of mainly senior colleagues, it was quite hard for them to find time to devote to me. I was given partial information about the projects that I needed to deliver and had to figure it out myself independently. However, I could see it was a hectic period for them and that they made an effort to teach me too.
On a daily basis, there was no perfect balance in terms of work load: some days were extremely busy when I had a deadline coming up with lots of stress and working hours, but others were extremely quiet and had no project to do. My internship role had no day to day tasks. It was project based.
During my internship, I haven not been given much responsibility, which makes sense though in my opinion. Responsibility comes with experience. Out of the 2 projects I delivered, one is not going to be used by the team. The other project will be used in their day to day tasks, at least in the first few months.
The skills I developed, and training I received will definitely assist me beyond in my career in the future. However, they won't assist me in my degree studies, as I did not study Finance at uni. This experience does not only provide us with technical skills expanding our financial knowledge, but also the ability to interact with different kinds of people and manage to collaborate with them.
The Company
It is normal that sometimes it is dull. You are still in an office, so it is normal that it is not super fun all the time. It is the nature of the job. On the other hand, the people surrounding me were a lot of fun, with humour, which made the ambiance positive.
The internship was very well organised. Out of the 10 week duration, the first week is purely induction training, so you will only be able to go to your desk on week 2. On week 1 they give you the program they set up for your whole internship, which includes teach-in sessions, networking with seniors, social events, etc.
The company is very generous in terms of training and development. They organise teach in sessions where you get to learn about different financial products, networking events with senior managers and technical sessions, where they teach you how to use different tools that you might need to use day to day.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
I received an offer from the desk, so prospects are good. I definitely want to work for such a great company.
The Culture
The social scene was great, if you had time to leave the desk. I joined several lunch/drinks/dinners and went to the corporate challenge.
London is very expensive to live. Even if internship is paid, there is a huge cost in terms of transport, rent, food and drinks.
Based on the few bars I've been the nightlife is quite good. Definitely rooftop bars are great options, as you have the view.
We had one opportunity to participate in a corporate responsibility day, where we were engaged in revamping a playground. Also, as interns, we were going for dinner and drinks after work. Some interns joined a gym. Also, there were two social events organised by the programme in very nice rooftop bars with great views.
