    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • This was truly an amazing internship that was well structured and involved real work which added value to the firm. The campus recruitment team did an excellent job providing networking opportunities and the ability to explore other business lines. Moreover, there was excellent local coordination within areas which was led by associates and VPs which really helped integrate us into the firm.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I spent time on two desks and on each occasion they really embraced me as part of the team. Everyone took time to get to know me and were extremely supportive of the learning journey. Honestly, the real value of this internship was the quality of the people, I have never felt better in a business environment.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Both my managers were extremely busy but that emphasized an important skill of the internship which was to know when to require peoples time. The most important part was that they effectively introduced me to people in the team and resources which I could access to guide my work, and cooperate with others.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Busy enough for the days and weeks to really fly by, I always had a large amount of work but not a quantity which seemed impossible to finish within the demanded time frames. Sales and trading is naturally a busy business area with evolving demands, at the time there are often moments where you are less busy as people are focused on other tasks and you have just finished something up. But that gives you an opportunity to network and see what others are doing which provides excellent learning opportunities.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I did work which was directly related to business outcomes whether that was preparing documents, conducting analysis, or helping out with various tasks. They really let you own the work they do, and as such they expect results. But this makes it clear that good quality execution is always needed.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Genuinely this has provided me with fundamental skills for both study and work. Whether it was the discipline of working the hours and making sure that everything was high quality or the opportunity to learn how to speak to senior colleagues and learn how to leverage all the resources available to you.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • In both teams, I joined the atmosphere was great, there was a clear focus on work but that did not stop there being nice conversation and opportunities to really get to know each other. You leave the internship wanting to go back to your team immediately. Away from the team, everyone is always welcoming and friendly irrespective of the business line.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • This was the most well structured internship I have ever experienced, they truly spare no expense for the internship. External and internal networking events, more casual events, weekly teach-ins, etc. It was all great, and there was at the minimum weekly communication from HR giving key updates, and anyways the entire team are super responsive and hold sessions which were easy to access.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • One full week of proper training covering a range of areas to provide a strong foundation for the learning which occurs on the internship. There was also an excellent amount of learning sessions throughout the internship, but also the learning experiences you get on the desk. The most development I have ever had in such a short amount of time.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • They do an excellent job of explaining future prospects, and critically the internship is the direct pipeline to a job at the firm. You meet people who are 15 years senior and they also did internships. It shows you that being there for the internship is the most important part. Then once there if you are a good fit they help you find the right job.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I was so surprised but I was with a group of unbelievably friendly people, who were outgoing, kind, and were a true pleasure to have on the program with me. I had the misconception that the kind of people in these internships would be very cutthroat and competitive, but there was a truly collaborative and friendly air to the group. This meant we often went out most weekends and also drinks after work.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Canary wharf is not cheap, but equally, you are paid well as an intern so hard to complain. Socialising usually consisted of going out for food and drinks, but also just hanging out in the green spaces nearby during the summer which was nice. Obviously extremely busy, but also had the weekends with people which was great.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Canary Wharf is Canary Wharf there are decent bars and good places to eat. But in terms of nightlife we just go to Shoreditch area or more central Soho, Mayfair, etc. as that it where the better nightlife is, but Canary Wharf is well connected so it is always quick to move areas.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • It was really up to you how much you wanted, there were sport events within teams, there were also the formal sport teams. There are various networking groups and also the chance to get involved in different corporate social responsibility schemes. The internal networking groups are great as they bring together people from different areas.
