The Role
I really enjoyed the internship. I was concerned that I might not enjoy it and that 10 weeks was a long time if i didn’t enjoy it. But JP Morgan made a real effort to make sure that every intern makes the most of their 10 weeks and it was an incredibly well organised internship which they’re constantly developing and improving.
It is not easy to make a markets intern feel valued by your colleagues as legally you’re not allowed to trade or be in contact with clients. However, given this, my team made sure I was learning a lot and working on projects directly related to helping them function as efficiently and successfully as possible.
I was given plenty of support by my manager and team. When I didn’t understand something and couldn’t work it out myself, they were always willing to explain things despite being incredibly busy! They also encouraged trying to work things out by yourself first which is the best way to learn in my opinion.
Before my first day, I was a little worried about the hours that might be expected of me, having heard some horror stories from friends but these stories were only related to interns in the investment banking division. In markets, your hours are shorter and more consistent day in day out and because I was both busy and enjoying it, the hours flew by.
I was given a refreshing amount of responsibility on the internship given how little I was expected to be given. I was responsible for three daily emails going out to over 100 different employees across the firm to help them in their roles which I was definitely not expecting to be doing.
Most of the skills I learnt won’t be directly applicable to my degree. However, it has taught me a lot about working in a team, not just a sports team (my only previous experience of working in a team), something which I will be able to apply next year in my group projects.
The Company
Very friendly. Employees across the firm either had time or would always make time for you whether they were juniors or managing directors. They are all aware of the fact that they were once in your shoes and that the interns are the future of the firm and so they spend a lot of time on you.
The internship was very well organised from start to finish. The one slight issue we had was the amount of time it took to get some of the tech set up but this was the only flaw I could see in how the 10 weeks was run. The training we had in the first week was brilliant.
A huge amount. We had one day of pre training followed by one week of training where we effectively participated in lectures all day learning about the ins and outs of the markets. What made this week enjoyable was the very charismatic teacher that we head along with all the incredible food we were given.

Company Parties/Events
I got a job with them. Great.
The Culture
There was a great social scene amongst fellow interns and colleagues. We had three intern socials organised for us, one at the beginning, one in the middle and one at the end. On top of this, my desk organised 3 different drinks events which were great for team building and getting to know the team better.
Canary Wharf isn’t cheap, but that’s London for you.
We tended to go out nearby, in shoreditch or elsewhere.
Not too many no.
