The Role
The internship was a fantastic learning opportunity and great chance to meet new people. I enjoyed the chance to explore the bank and really grasp what it is like to work as an investment banker. I would recommend the programme to others who are interested in working in the industry.
I was made to feel very welcome by the team. Existing employees were always friendly, approachable and happy to take the time to explain things.
My line manager was supportive throughout. Regular feedback provided therefore it was clear where more effort was required in order to develop further.
Within the investment bank, there were times when we were very busy and other very quiet, which can be frustrating but is the nature of the job. The hours were consistently long.
I was given far more responsibility than I had expected I would receive before I started! I was trusted with work that I could see had a meaningful impact on projects, and ultimately research presented to clients.
I believe that I have acquired significant transferable skills. The work ethic required to complete to the job will allow me to work more efficiently during my final year of university I am sure.
The Company
My team was very friendly and always included us in all social activities. The environment was far more social than I had expected - with a work hard play hard attitude.
The scheme was very organised and structured, there were numerous optional development, networking and information events to get stuck into.
The initial training was less rigorous than at other investment banks I would say. That said, training and development opportunities throughout the internship were strong.

I got the impression that Barclays was a meritocratic organisation and there is a clear line of promotion.
The Culture
All the investment banking intern were very social, often meeting up for drinks after work and at the weekend!
Canary Wharf, and London more broadly, is not cheap therefore eating and drinking was fairly expensive.
There are a few nice bars in Canary Wharf, but overall it is limited.
Aside for a couple of social events there were really any activities outside of the office.
