The Role
My internship was an extremely valuable experience. As well as working within my department with a great team, I was able to explore other areas of the bank and develop my professional network. I was able to attend various events throughout my internship and received great support from all colleagues.
I developed a very strong relationship with members of my team and more broadly, other individuals within the bank. I was able to reach out to other colleagues who were always receptive to support me. In particular, my department instantly made me feel like part of the team and continued to teach and support me throughout my time at the bank.
I received weekly feedback from my direct manager to track my progress. This enabled us both to give constructive feedback on my internship and ensure I had full support and guidance to make the most out of my experience and to ensure I was on track for an offer for the graduate scheme.
I was set a number of objectives at the beginning of my internship. This gave me the foundations for what I would be doing on a daily basis. As well as working on objectives within the team and completing daily tasks, I had the opportunity to fill any capacity by networking with other individuals within the bank and arranging overviews for various departments.
I was given the responsibility for a number of daily tasks within my team and given my own project to implement by the end of my internship. This gave me the responsibility to work towards automation within my department; something not yet done before. My internship was only 10 weeks long so I understood that I could not take full responsibility for some of the more complex roles within my team.
As well as gaining a greater understanding of banking and what it is like to work for a global corporation when I complete my studies, I have also had the opportunity to develop a number of personal and professional skills. I have built a professional network which will be invaluable to me after education. I have also demonstrated that I can work well within and adapt to a new team. I was also given a number of training opportunities which will assist me beyond my studies such as my improved competence in excel.
The Company
From my understanding, interns within J.P Morgan can have very different experiences depending on what area you work within and who you’re working alongside. There are different management styles and different roles which require different types of work. The internship provided me with a great experience but I believe it can highly depend on what area and team you join as each intern within the bank can have very different experiences.
I was set a number of mandatory online training courses prior to starting with the bank to be completed throughout the duration of my internship. However, I also had the opportunity to complete a number of additional training courses which will be of great use to me in the future. Furthermore, my manager and other colleagues took time to meet with me and provide feedback to aid my development during my internship.
Company Parties/Events
On reflection, following my experiences during my internship within J.P Morgan, it is most definitely a corporation that I would seek future employment. I have been offered the graduate programme within the bank and look forward to returning in the following year.
The Culture
I have made a number of great friends within my intern network which I hope to stay in touch with. The campus recruiters arrange a number of professional and social events during the internship with all interns, which means you can build strong relationships with other individuals and hear each others experiences.
I was living in central Bournemouth in student accommodation during my internship. Prices and cost of living were average.
The nightlife in Bournemouth is very good. It is a student town so there are lots of places to go, whether it’s bars or clubs. There are also loads of places to go to eat and it’s great to be by the beach for 10 weeks in summer.
I attended various other events outside of work. I was able to take part in a number of volunteering days but also events during work such as the hackathon.
