The Role
I greatly enjoyed the 10 weeks I spent in J.P. Morgan in almost all aspects. This is my favorite internship out of all five that I have done so far. Nice working environment, supportive colleagues and team culture, interesting projects to work on and structured design of the whole programme, made me determined to seek for full-time employment in the firm.
I was lucky to be in a greatly supportive team. On my first day, I met the whole team and they all offer to give me high-level lecture on the team's role within the bank, and let me shadow them to learn what they do on a daily basis. During my time there, they cared about what I learn, how I perform, if I am happy there and if I need their help.
My manager gave me a great deal of support. He set priorities with me at the beginning of the internship, frequently checked my progress, and we did catch-ups weekly to talk about feedbacks and plan ahead. He gave useful personal advice on how to stand out and how to make myself known to other people in the wider team.
For the first two weeks, I didn't have much real work to do, so I spent most of my time just learning about concepts related to work. As time went, I started to get daily tasks and projects to work on, so busier in later weeks. Usually, when the team is busy at month-ends, I would be less busy as they have less time to manage me.
The usual practice for interns is doing a project, separately from the daily/monthly BAU of the team. The project I did is interesting and fresh knowledge to the rest of the team. I also got some daily work on analyzing some data and distributing my analysis to the team, so it made me feel useful to the team. At the end I presented on what I did to the wider team.
Product knowledge is definitely one useful part. Though I have learnt the product at uni, only when I really worked on that did I realize how superficial it was. Besides that, I also sharpened my presentation skills which is far less formal than those at uni, but more challenging as I got more probing questions and less time to prepare. My Microsoft Office skills got improved as well.
The Company
I would say the atmosphere of my team is really chill and friendly. There are times each day that all team members just chat about life and make jokes. They are supportive to each other, and will always help others out. The MDs are nice as well, and frequently walk around to talk with us.
I would say this internship programme is well-designed and definitely recommended. The recruiting and on-boarding process is very smooth. It has various activities embedded in the 10 weeks, including networking sessions with buddies/senior people/interns from other departments, senior speaker series, introductory sessions to different teams in the division, graduate panels, etc.
The company provided a lot of training opportunities and encouraged us to use.

Upon strong performance in the internship, the firm would grant full-time employment, which is the graduate programme. For my division, it's a 3-year rotational programme and supports CIMA qualification. Competitive salary and nice design of the programme again. In terms of the ratio of return offer, I would say it is quite generous, and you shouldn't worry if you have tried your best to perform.
The Culture
We have three networking opportunities with all summer interns from all departments: first day, mid-way and the end of the internship. On an ongoing basis, we would social with fellow interns in our own department at every event/activity organized. I have become good friends with many of them and we still keep in touch even after the internship ends.
Canary Wharf is not a cheap neighbourhood, not to mention London as whole. But the canteen is nice and doesn't cost much. And don't forget Yoyo app to collect points for free breakfast! In canary wharf, you got a lot of options so if you're looking for cheap places, there would be some.
I'm not a person fancy nightlife, so not the right person to ask. But I guess it should be all right.
Yes JPM is a firm that you can always find numerous interesting activities. For example, during the internship we had a corporate social responsibility day, when we gathered together to do volunteering work to some neighbourhoods nearby. I did fence-painting and cleaning. It's meaningful activity and we also had fun in the meantime.
