About You
I really enjoyed the insight day because it was a chance to see the real working environment in which I hope to find myself once I graduate. I was also given to chance to sit in on meetings and understand the work being done at BP which was an invaluable experience.
I felt very valued due to the way every person treated me at BP. My intern who I shadowed was very friendly and accommodating of my needs. What really made me feel valued were the meetings she set up so I could talk to her supervisor and fellow interns about BP.
My meeting with the intern where she explained her work and what we were doing that day made me feel very supported. Further guidance came through documents I was given to read about the work she did, which helped add to my insight of BP and meant I knew what was going on.
My intern gave me lots of information about how she has used the internship to add to her experience and University and aid her studies, which will allow me to do the same thing. I think I will use the skills I learnt of being in a professional environment in multidisciplinary teams as I go forward in my studies and career.
The Company
My intern sat me down at the start of the day to talk through the itinerary, which made me feel that it was very organised and structured. We had various meetings and talks with other staff members which showed she had cared about my experience at BP, and this showed throughout the day.
I found the atmosphere really positive and professional during my insight day at BP. All of the staff were friendly and welcoming to me, and treated me with respect even as an insight student. The environment was very calm as people got on with their work, but they also made time to talk to me.
The company did not invest lots of time in training me. Instead I was left with the intern and shadowed her for the day, rather than being trained for a specific role.
The intern was able to tell me in detail what her normal working day is, including her hours, her tasks and even her calendar. This helped to give me real insight into what working at BP would be like, as did talking to the other interns who were also based on sight.
I received lots of insight into the culture. Before I went to BP, they gave me lots of information about what to expect, and once I arrived I was given a tour by my intern to help me better understand the company. I also chatted with her supervisor about her career with BP.
The day was very valuable because it informed me of all the different career paths available to me in BP and how I can better my chances of succeeding there.
Everything Else
I was given an expenses form at the end of the day to fill in, and told this should take around 6 weeks. Ahead of the insight day I was also given information about the expenses I could claim.
I met other employees at lunch in an informal networking lunch, which was very relaxing and enjoyable, as well as insightful. I also met senior colleagues during the day, so saw the breadth of employees at BP and gained real insight into the working culture and how to progress in the company.
They were informal but relaxed, which I liked.
The interns told me about extra curricular responsibilities they have within BP, which was fun to hear about.
I would recommend it because it’s the chance to see an impressive company on a human level.
