The Role
Overall I enjoyed my work placement, but it's not the sort of job I would envisage doing long term. However, I got on great with my team and other people in the office, which made it a great experience.
I was given pretty good support, meeting with a manager/mentor regularly once a week.
Most of the time I was either swamped with work or had very little to do. I almost never had a normal work load.
I was given a fair amount of responsibility and I had to communicate to some reasonably big players within the field I was in. This did make the job more interesting.
Some of what I learnt could be taken away, but most of the on the job skills were specific to 3M. However, some of the 'soft skills' might well help me in to future, as will the experience of working within an office environment
The Company
It was often pretty quiet in the office, with the headcount getting fewer and fewer throughout the year. However, my team were great and I got on well with them
Once I got into the job, it became easier. However, to begin with, I was given no handover period and I still had a lot of questions once I was let loose.
I was sent on a number of courses, including externally provided courses, which I'm sure were a significant cost to the department. So I felt like I received a pretty good amount of training, despite the initial lack of support.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
I think I would be able to get a job if I wanted one, but I might still be required to jump through the hoops and go to the assessment centre.
The Culture
We all got on really well and the opportunity was there to meet up outside of work should you wish
Reading is pretty pricey in comparison with other student cities, however, the accommodation is not too badly priced.
Nightlife was pretty good, but nothing amazing
Yes there were quite a lot of opportunities for getting involved in various sports and activities
