The Role
The internship was very demanding, but I learned a tremendous amount during the 10 weeks there and met many great colleagues and fellow interns along the way. The training was a strong highlight of the experience. I would highly recommend the experience to others interested in an M&A experience at a world-class bank.
I connected very well to my EMEA Real Estate team. The remote networking period was a useful way to build an initial rapport prior to joining the team. I was lucky to have very helpful and personable buddies (Jaime Riego Inclan and Nicolò Raffaele) who helped me navigate the team and the work streams.
The MD (Massimo Saletti) was kind enough to offer a phone call for an informal chat prior to the internship. He was also vocal about being available if I ever had any questions. Max Bingre, my staffer, regularly sat down with me over the course of the internship to discuss updates and any concerns I had.
I was very busy on a daily basis, but the tasks felt meaningful and challenging in a positive way, so I was quite happy with the workload. I always felt supported if I ever had any questions, and I was able to push back if the workload ever became unmanageable.
I was able to close a live transaction during my internship, which I appreciate is a rare experience for interns. Apart from that, I was deliberately offered a broad exposure to the various technical tasks that are expected of interns and analysts: spreading comps, benchmarks, marketing pitches, client deliverables and market updates.
This internship confirmed my interest in a career in finance, and I am sure it will be a critical step for developing the first steps in that track. It gave me the concrete experience necessary for pursuing the Finance Major I will be entering at HEC Paris. Moreover, the high-quality training we received at the start of the internship was directly relevant to sharpening my skills in Finance.
The Company
Due to the small size of the Real Estate team, the team had a close-knit environment that meant that I was able to connect very easily to members of the team across all seniorities. Moreover, the flat organisation meant that juniors such as interns were expected to take on quite a bit of responsibility from early on.
The internship was well organised, with a clear agenda set up and communicated to interns from Day 1. We were regularly informed of key milestones (e.g. intern reviews and social events). Even though the internship was very short, the pace of the training and workload was well-scaled for the experience.
It was very evident that the rumours are true: JP Morgan invests in the training and recruitment of its employees more significantly than other banks on the street. I also felt the personal investment behalf of the Real Estate team; everyone was willing to take the time to explain the background behind different tasks.

The future employment prospects at JP Morgan are very appealing. I have turned down full time offers at 2 other institutions for JP Morgan. The distinguishing feature of JP Morgan is the high quality of its people, the impressive quality of its training programmes, and the professionalism of its culture.
The Culture
Yes, the social events were well timed and for the most part enjoyable. Many interns had already known each other from the Spring Week and Application processes, so the overall atmosphere was lively and relaxed. It was a good move from HR to inform us that there was a spot for everyone on the team depending on our performance, as this made the atmosphere more teamwork-oriented rather than competitive.
I paid 800 GBP per month for my flat, which was located 10 minutes on foot away form the office. It would have been appreciated if HR had provided more resources for finding a flat during the summer internship or offered some kind of price guidance on what to expect in various neighbourhoods around London.
As JP Morgan was based in Canary Wharf, the nightlife tended to be lively around 7-10 pm on weekday evenings but was very empty on weekends. This was not such an important factor, however. Canary Wharf was a good place for socialising with bankers from other firms and finding drinks with colleagues from the same bank.
There were a few opportunities that were advertised, but given the hours involved in M&A, these opportunities were not very realistic for summer interns. The community day was a good way to force interns to get involved outside of the office and meet other interns from different parts of the bank.
