    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was an amazing learning experience with an incredible firm but was also extremely rigorous and not for the faint-hearted! I learnt about the ins and outs of Markets, whilst gaining valuable connections and friends. J.P Morgan employees are also very friendly and took the time to explain and help me understand all the facets of their job.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone at JPM, from HR to MDs, spent a large amount of time in making sure that interns could make the most of our time at J.P Morgan. Employees spent many hours teaching us and explaining all the facets of their job. I doubt that you could find employees that are so heavily invested in the progress of the interns as at JP.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My managers guided me and had weekly chats to go over my activities throughout the week. They gave me points of development and paid close attention to my concerns, working hard to help me fix any problems I encountered. HR are also amazing at working with interns to allocate them to desks that better suit their skillsets.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I didn't have a minute to spare on the internship! Every day consisted of writing multiple daily emails, shadowing my desk and the surrounding desks, sitting in teach-ins and having occasional talks by more senior members of the firm. This way the interns were never bored and were consistently learning more!

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • This depends on the desk you spend your time with as there are restrictions on the tasks that interns could be allocated. However, on my desk I was given a fair amount of responsibility as I sent out daily firm-wide emails and communicated with overseas members of the team to obtain information for evening emails.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The most important skills you acquire are the ability to assimilate a large amount of information, be extremely accurate even when pushed for time, grit, resilience and determination which I would say are transferable to jobs in any industry and any course taken at university. You also develop soft skills such as interpersonal skills and relationship building which will assist you in any career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The environment is very fast-paced and there is always something going on which is always very exciting. Everyone at JP Morgan is extremely friendly and my desk had a great relationship with each other and the surrounding teams. Team discussions were not always revolved around work and members were also friends which is incredibly important especially when you spend 10+ hours a day working with your team.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was extremely well organised in that each intern was placed with a desk and the desk assigned them tasks to do that consistently developed their skills. If the interns were not a suitable fit for the desk, HR worked swiftly to relocate them and managers were always very invested in making sure the intern was having a valuable experience at the firm.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • All members of the firm, from the most senior to the most junior spent so much time in training and developing the skills of interns. This I found very impressive as I did not expect even the heads of floors to spend time getting to know the interns, and it showed how much the firm values the young talent they hire.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing - the job is very dynamic and fast-paced and there is always room for more learning. Most people who join JP Morgan have stayed with the firm for years because there are also great prospects for progression through the firm. The job is also well payed which is appealing and the amount of effort you put in dictates your bonus.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes interns were all very friendly with each other, and hung out during the week as well as the weekend. I liked how in social events, all interns from different departments attended, so I had friends all over the firm. Fridays were great as interns gathered in the nearest bars and it was a good way to meet new people.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The placement was in London which is one of the most expensive cities for living, and all nights out were generally very costly. Places to get lunch around canary wharf are also quite expensive. However, you get paid well as an intern and this compensates for the cost of living.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • London is an amazing city for nightlife although it can be on the expensive side if you are not from the city and visit clubs in the centre.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • You work many hours a day and are generally too tired to get involved in lots of activities, but most interns would go to the gym before going home. On the weekends though you had plenty of time to explore the city and get involved in activities - there's always something to do in London.
