The Role
The internship was an amazing experience. The work that I was doing was meaningful, fast paced and related to real world events. The program had a great structure that allowed me to settle in and network with other employees outside of my team. There was also a lot of interaction with other interns, which was really nice.
It did not take long before I was doing meaningful work for the team. Most of the tasks were quite simple and helped the other team members to focus on more important tasks. This allowed me to feel like I was adding value to the team. However, because the tasks were simple, I did not feel I was adding significantly more value over time. With respect to the team itself, I felt like I got on really well with them and we worked well together.
To get guidance from the two associates on my team was not particularly difficult. They helped me, gave me most of my tasks and gave me a lot of feedback. To get feedback and guidance from management (my line manager), I had to be more proactive. In the meetings we had he was very helpful and gave very good advice.
With just work or just the internship program tasks, the time management and number of tasks would have been very manageable. When both were combined together it did create a couple of days that we’re quite stressful because my team were not too interested in the internship program events. So overall I would say I was busy but not too busy.
I was involved in some live pricings, which were important to get right. I also produced some material that was given to clients. These tasks did have a high levels of responsibility but they were always cross checked before being sent off, which should be the case with interns. For being there just 9 weeks in the team I felt like I was given a decent amount of responsibility.
The general skills of time management and use of Microsoft programs will definitely be useful as I move forward in my degree and my career. I also learnt how to work in a high pressure environment and how to look after myself when the working days can be very long.
The Company
I was very impressed with the overall atmosphere in the office. Everyone was nice and willing to help. If I ever had a question I would always be directed to the right place and the questions were always answered very thoroughly. It was easy to get along with nearly everyone I met.
The internship program was extremely well organised. The timing and number of events was perfect. The training week allowed me to settle in and then the internship events broke up the weeks with nice breaks. The only area for improvement would be the desk rotation system as it did not work for a few people including myself.
The training week was very thorough and enjoyable. There were also many events held throughout that were planned to enhance the knowledge of the interns. Initially my team put a lot of time and effort into teaching me the work that the team did and how best to do it.
Healthcare/Dental
I am very happy to have been offered a returning placement at JP Morgan. I really look forward to coming back next year and going through the process again. Working at such a prestigious firm, with such a great atmosphere and rewarding work is a very exciting prospect. I have also made a few friends there, which make it even more comfortable to return.
The Culture
During the training week there was a great social scene with the other interns. In the next couple of weeks after that it quietened down apart from the coorperate responsibility day. Then toward the end it picked back up again once a weekly routine was established between the interns. With respect to equity markets specifically, I felt like a lot of interns got along with each other very well.
The cost of living ended up being very high while I was there because I ate out literally the entire time.
Fridays outside the office were good between the interns but the appetite to go out late afterwards wasn’t there.
There was a football match between rates employees and the summer interns twice during the internship. This event was really nice and the only opportunity I saw to get involved in outside work activities while I was there. There were a few planned events that were brilliant, like the socials and corporate responsibility day but they were planned for us through work.
