    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I completed this internship as part of the Change100 program. The staff were really friendly and I continually felt challenged. I loved the work life balance and the company has great incentives for diversity and inclusion which is important to me. I also think the company genuinely value your company. You can work from home and it's flexi-time - It's great.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My team were really friendly and inclusive. BMW Group have a hot desking environment which means you sit with a variety of people and the senior management also sit out on the floor. Definately had a family friendly vibe to it and really happy to have worked there. My team always provided constructive feedback.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was great in giving me guidance and support. We had bi-weekly one to ones and I also had a mentor in another department. It was good as well with the hot desking environment to gain exposure from those more senior, consultants or contractors. I really enjoyed it :).

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The work had some deadlines some days and then it was easier others. I think they really support learning at work in your free time though. I did feel challenged however my department in particular has peaks and troffs with the work they do. However, I never felt bored as there was always minor tasks to get on with.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Like any internship you won't be running the show. However, I was given great responsibility and am proud of my outcomes. I think I was given the right level of responsibility as an intern, alongside great exposure - the company really support work shadowing or finding out about other departments you may be interested in.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Definitely a great internship. I think this will definitely assist me in my MSc and I really enjoyed the skills I developed. My undergraduate is nothing to do with business, yet I am now able to conduct a variety of different things and my inter-personal skills have developed. I also think the company are great for supporting your development and ensuring you thrive as a person.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office was really friendly - everyone said hi when you made coffee and if you were in the lift people would always have a conversation. I would say it's harder to network outside your team but I took part in volunteering activities and rounders to get to know more people!.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was really good, this was the first time BMW Group were doing 3 month internships with the Change100 program. They supported our development days and encouraged us to meet up with other interns who were on placement years. They also treated us like valued members of the team.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I went to a Learn @ Work course in Time Management whilst at BMW. I applied for others but they're so popular I couldn't go! I also had training days with the Change100 program which the company supported and therefore didn't need to take holiday for it! It was a really proactive learning environment and people were really supportive of each other.

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • It depends. I'm personally not on the placement program - but they are able to get fast track jobs. There's also the global leadership and development program for graduates. I think because we weren't on the placement we didn't get this opportunity. But I was there for an internship as part of the Change100 program so expected not to be offered anything.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I wasn't on the general internship programme so I can't comment. However, amongst the Change100 participants we met up on a regular basis in breaks or on lunch. The company even encouraged us to go to the MINI Plant in Oxford. Outside of work it was difficult as people lived all over Hampshire and I don't have a car.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I didn't do much socialising outside of work as I pretty much just lived in the area monday-friday. There wasnt much to do in the local area that appealed to me, as I usually do sports who's seasons start in September. The cost of living is fine on the salary that is given.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I think there's a club in the next town over called ' Moo Moo's' but beyond that there's nothing. Also, taxi's in this area are very expensive. I spent most of my weekends in london so if I did go out it would be there. You have to plan it thoroughly though.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The company has a variety of different sports teams. I know in summer they have rounders and a football team all year around. I personally only got involved in rounders but there's also yoga etc in lunch breaks which was fun. Really good way to network with people. I was here over summer though, so getting involved in my sports was difficult as it wasnt the season.
