The Role
Unilever has been an immersive and challenging 12 week internship that was thoroughly enjoyable as well. From the on-boarding process, to the role of the interns to the career culture which puts forward individual health allowing time out for the gym to ensure this, it's hard to have NOT had a great time here.
My team (UL Amazon, U.K) were the most incredible team I could have worked with over the last 12 weeks. My line manager, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] was not only kind and patient but fun and ambitious for what I could achieve as well. The team were incredibly welcoming and I wish everyone had the same experience as I did.
there was never a time we I couldn't/ did not have anyone to reach out to for advice. given the collaborative culture of the tasks to the team away days and weekly catch up sessions, Unilever provided all the necessary requirements for me to seek guidance from my managers/ supervisors.
Of course there were days that were busier than other, but my 12 weeks were more or less non-stop. the first week is full of inductions and the last were all handovers and tying up loose ends. the 10 weeks in between I was encouraged to do all I could to meet my goals but also to venture out and expand current and new skills.
I was doing Account Manager Tasks but there was always someone to approve any work (which I'm not complaining about). I was able to achieve 4/5 of my goals which is great and I was given project management tasks to ensure they were fulfilled, setting up meetings - booking skills sessions to make sure they were completed was all my responsibility.
In all honesty, the 12 week internship has taught me more applicable knowledge in the working world than the two years of my degree has so far. from presentation and deck creation to finance and market insight to excel skills I know unilever has set me up to do incredibly well wherever I go.
The Company
my office was great! it helped to come in for meeting purposes but also to have your team by you to answer quick questions to complete tasks. we also had lunch together everyday which is a great way to bond getting a chance to talk about life outside of the office.
So UL didn't give us all the info until a week before we started (I accepted in January and found out my exact placement a week before I arrived in London to start) so that made me nervous but the on boarding process is great with lots of inductions to help you understand unilever from the start.
There were many inductions which were great at helping me understand UL and a few skills sessions I could have signed up to except they were all full! Which is a shame but shows that people here are making use of the resources around them provided by Unilever in addition to things like team away days which helped bring the team together.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Working from home
So UL has a graduate scheme which looks great, it helps having done a IP/SP BUT it doesn't give you an advantage against others who have not except on the term of insight into the company. it was easy to chat to people on the scheme already to find out more about it all.
The Culture
So this summer was the world cup and the team always got together in a pub in London to watch it which was lovely, along with team away days were we had team building activities. there were birthday meals and leaving meals so the social scene here at unilever ecommerce team is very much present.
the south is so expensive compared to the north which is no surprise but when it's daily and you have to spend so much on commuting and lunch and the tube for other jobs it all quickly adds up. leatherhead is very small and your typical southern town but rent everywhere in the area is exceptionally high.
leatherhead is where unilever is based but very few people live here as they mainly commute in from London, which I'm sure you can guess has a very strong night life. most people live in Clapham junction/ Wimbledon so it's your pick where you want to live for your interests!
So they've just set up a netball competition and all the teams eg ecommerce vs Tesco team will be playing against each other which is exciting. there are also birthday meals and leaving do's as well so always a chance to meet up. plus you're in London so plenty of places and opportunities to get busy outside of work.
