The Role
It was a great opportunity to work on a unique construction site with an opportunity for multiple construction experiences. However, the location didn't offer much outside of work and it often became difficult and expensive to travel to and from home.
All were helpful and friendly and there was a good community atmosphere.
My mentor and line manager were more than willing to help and advise where needed. It was also useful to have have further opportunity to learn about more aspects of the project.
There was a good balance between giving a job to get on with but also shadowing and learning on my first placement.
I would have liked more responsibility however it is understandable why I only had so much based on the importance of my mentors role and the site itself.
It was a necessary aspect of construction which encompasses the whole site. However, to get experience as Site Engineer would best suit me for a role straight after my degree.
The Company
Good atmosphere with an opportunity to have a laugh as well as being able to focus on work.
Was offered a variety of jobs and the site placement scheme offered a off chance to understand most aspects of the site.
Weekly video learning session were offered as well as an opening event in Manchester and a closing event in the Dartford Head Office for the summer placement scheme.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Travel loan
The company placement schemes offer a great opportunity to put one foot in the door when starting a Civil Engineering career.
The Culture
Everyone was really easy to get on with and I still keep in contact with most.
Due to the location of the project the lodge cost offered did not cover all the accommodation (however, it did cover most). It also did not cover travel to and from home. However, the location where I stayed did seem like the best location for the project.
It was often too expensive to travel to and from town in the evenings. The town also did not offer much.
There were work events however these were far between.
