The Role
I was given a lot of opportunity and responsibility on my placement which made my job very enjoyable.
I felt very valued as senior members of staff would look to me for advice and help with a variety of problems and they all treated me with respect.
They pushed me when it was needed, and listened to when i had any issues. Especially given how busy the project was.
Most days i was extremely busy however in the first few weeks of the placement it was slightly slow but i feel that is the nature with any placement
A lot of responsibility was given to me and i was trusted to lead meetings if senior staff were not there and i was also given the opportunity to develop my ideas which i believed would help the project.
The project was very helpful for a number of skills. The section i worked on was environmental mitigation, which is not closely linked to civil engineering however i have a great understanding of constraints on any project.
The Company
Lovely and friendly office which i would highly recommend to anyone to do a placement in.
I was given a well planned job with plenty of room to grow which benefited me greatly.
I was put on multiple training days, all of which benefited me. In particular the insights training which is a detailed personality test and the quality work shop.
Financial Bonus
Travel loan
Very appealing as i have the opportunity to progress within the company and i know that Laing O'Rourke are keen on ensuring its graduates achieve their chartership quickly.
The Culture
Yes there were meals out, pub quizzes, team drinks etc. Very good atmosphere in the office. I also started a 5 a side weekly game.
Birmingham is not cheap but it is not extremely expensive.
Lots of restaurants bars and clubs in the area, so plenty to do.
Plenty to do in Birmingham would recommended the area to any placement student.
