The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed the placement, the variety of work and the sheer exposure made it an exciting experience. The people were without exception willing to help and impart knowledge where ever they could. the mixture of practical and office based work gave the placement real depth, as well as the variety of offices and departments allowed one to see the bigger picture aspect of the companies role fulfilling projects
I feel quite valued by my colleagues at times and at others quite useless due to being unqualified in certain aspects, therefore unable to help. overall they always made me feel needed and valued for my experiences, they tried to tailor any work or experience to me and therefore made me feel in control of my work.
Fully and without hesitation support was always there
This varied from rotation to rotation and day to day massively.
I think I was treated like a new member of staff with no bias against me for my age or lack of experience. This gave me a sense of realism and honestly it helped to be treated like an adult rather than an intern/student. this motivated me to work better and more productivley
the placement has given me an insight into an array of different disciplines and I have learned a great deal of transferable skills. From simple knowledge about the basics of railway signalling to the vast working knowledge of the commercial world. interacting with clients and contractors allowed me to develop my networking and interpersonal skills
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was always kind friendly and open. At busier times there was a gentle bustle of work and when there was an event such as an extremely hot day or someones birthday/ special occasion there was a simple coming together of people over food or conversation. typically the office was a brilliant working environment.
I feel the layout and higher order organisation was very well planned and the rotations well organised. however I feel that there was a lack of communication to the managers of my rotations as to when i would be arriving and what sort of work would be suitable to give me. I also feel the 2 week placements are alittle too short to gain a full insight and it would perhaps be more intuitive to have longer rotations but fewer of them.
The company invested in training me both internally through my managers and colleagues as well as internal courses through the intranet. but also they provided external courses to ensure my competence. This combined with an array of practical experience both on track and in the field gave a huge development of my personal training

very appealing both from a financial and developmental prospective. Siemens is a globally recognised company with an excellent reputation, the appeal to work for them is huge from benefits to advance within the chosen wing of the company or transfer departments or sectors. the fact is at the start of my career i am not entirely sure as to where I want to be in terms of job sector and Siemens offers the ability for me to experience a large proportion of sectors and work out the best one for me
The Culture
The fellow intern at the croydon branch and myself got on really well, we collaborated on a series of projects and participated in volunteering and work events together. having someone in the same situation really helped to bridge the gap between myself and the workplace. it was also a useful point of advice and knowledge for upcoming rotations as we went to differing departments first.
Unfortunately my placement is in london. I think that is probably enough information as to the sheer cost of living. Luckily the wage I earned whilst at Siemens was plenty for me to afford socialising and living. The ability to save a little proportion for use later in life was also invaluable
Its London so there is everything and anything
Definitely, there is a plethora of opportunities available ranging from developmental courses in the field to classroom based teaching. there is also opportunities to volunteer in fact we are offered 2 paid volunteer days per year to give back to society. there are sports and social activities available in each office.
