    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • It was overall great, information rich and extremely valuable. However, It was clear that some work shadowing departments were not ready for us so there were some inconsistencies in the quality of work shadowing experience that everyone got. The HR staff were super helpful and friendly - the same goes for the other staff we met during the week at RBS.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • It’s hard to judge as we did not get immersed in real work with the RBS staff. The HR team was lovely as usual and were very encouraging of us. At the careers development fair when the other staff realised we aren’t RBS employees, were still just as open and welcoming.

    3/5

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • Support from Peter and Verity was fantastic. We didn’t have much responsibility that required a high level of support, but HR in supporting the interns through the assessment process and getting around was absolutely fantastic. The RBS staff interviewing us were all very kind and supportive and gave us lots of guidance.

    5/5

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As this is just an insight week, we had very little responsibility in terms of doing real technical work. The insight week was more valuable for information - and it satisfied that purpose very well. The week was very content rich and we learned a lot about the different roles of data & analytics in financial services.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • All except the work shadowing was very well structured. We had a timetable and meeting points, and HR team to take us from one new location to the other. Some of the staff we work shadowed was unaware or not prepared for us - but nevertheless the information they shared with us was still valuable.

    3/5

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The atmosphere was great thanks to both HR and the other interns. HR set a supportive culture for us so it wasn’t competitive between the interns, allowing us to all become friends. Other staff were really kind and eager to share their experiences. It’s clear that RBS has a very welcoming, friendly culture.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The first day was completely focused on personal development and I learned a lot of great techniques to implement in my personal life. Comprehensive feedback was also given on interviews which is really important to any candidate. Due to the shortness of the work experience, I cannot comment on any further direct personal training but I have heard great things from the grads.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • Conversations with the graduates and the staff I work shadowed was very helpful in understanding what to expect on the internship, grad programme and also in RBS as a full time job. I see they very much value internal mobility which is fantastic. The only thing is I would like to know more about how interns/grads are allocated to the specific sub divisions of data & analytics.

    5/5

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • It was extremely helpful to purely be in the work environment for a week and also having direct exposure to a variety of staff members and the campus-wide careers development event. Everyone we met were so friendly and happy to share their experiences - even though we weren’t RBS employees.

    5/5

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • The insight week helped massively and provided invaluable understanding of not only the division, but the financial sector as a whole. It made me realise just how important technology and data is, and how much it has infiltrated and penetrated every part of the company and wider sector. After this week, I will definitely be stirring my career direction towards highly data driven and quantitative fields.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • I was not paid a wage but I was reimbursed for food and travel during the week. I’m totally happy with this combination as there really wasn’t a need to pay us, considering that we didn’t contribute to the workflow at RBS and it was much more of an educational experience. Food allowances were very fair and generous.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • RBS seems to have a lot of campuswide events. I wasn’t there long enough though to comment.
