The Role
Loved it. It gave me a great insight to the industrial world, I was given loads of opportunities and they really looked after me.
I always felt like part of the team. I was not treated like a young student, but as an equal employee.
I was given what I would call a suitable amount. Not so much that I felt as though I was being babysat. But enough so that I didn't feel lost and out of my depth.
The days would fluctuate. On average I would say that I was busy. Some days there was less work to do which would sometimes get a bit boring, other days I would be on my feet all day which is really fun but could get stressful/tiring after a few days. Overall I would say that I was always busy, there was always work for me to do.
I was given all the responsibilities that you would expect of a new starter or any ages. I liked this because it felt as though I had really started a real job. I appreciate that the experience given to me was extremely valuable in that sense. I was not given any responisbilities you'd expect anyone with a 5 year contract to get though, understandably.
I don't think anything could be more useful. I was able to apply my university knowledge here without a doubt. On top of that I was able to learn more skills, both specific to chemistry and skills that would benefit an employee also.
The Company
It was professional but relaxed. It was easy to approach anyone and there were break out areas available if you wanted a little relax or chat, something that was needed on a stressful or busy day. You get very happy vibes from the office, and it encouraged me to work hard.
It was very organised. AstraZeneca have been running the placement year for a long time now and I can tell that they have it down to a T now.
They invested a lot. Throughout my year I was able to attend workshops and seminars relating to chemistry and the pharmaceutical industry. I found that this aided my learning and understanding of the industry.

Very appealing. I will be applying for a graduate entry job at AstraZeneca.
The Culture
YES! There were around 20 of us all living very close. We would do stuff during the week and at the weekends. They became some of my closest friends and we were all very sad to leave at the end of the year. AstraZeneca/HAYS ensured that we were all in contact with each other before placement so we could arrange living arrangements if desired.
In my opinion it was brilliant. It was cheap to live in Macclesfield and you were only a 20 minute train away from Manchester, or a 1 hour 40 minute train away from London! With the peak district at my doorstep and what feels like millions of pubs in Macclesfield I don't think I could ask for much more.
Lots of pubs of different desire, so something for everyone. And a nightclub, which was so bad that it was good.
Yep, obviously you would have to go and find them yourself. I joined a fencing club, a cheerleading club and went to adult gymnastic sessions when I could fit it in.
