The Role
Really enjoyed it throughout, lots of responsibility and autonomy which you wouldn't normally expect from a placement. Had varied duties and a wide training program that covers every aspect of the business, both in the office and residential at the Reed business school in the Cotswold's. Learning loads of industry skills but also those that are transferable to Uni and any form of future employment.
Very welcomed from day 1. Easy to get on with the team and have quite a lot of contact with other branches ie. at training courses, on the phone and so on, all have been very kind and happy to help in any situation. My office often need favours from others and they are always happy to help.
Full training provided at the start, monthly reviews and progress checks, realistic objectives set and they are always happy to answer any queries that I have. As it's a large business there are always things to learn, which everyone is always more than happy to go through and explain to me.
How busy depends on what roles we are recruiting for at the time but it is always balanced perfectly to reflect this. Sometimes it will be lots on the phone filling high volumes of candidates for big roles, sometimes searching and headhunting specific candidates, so the range of environments is enjoyable.
Lots of responsibility and autonomy from the start which is one of the main enjoyable factors, yet still have lots of support and guidance available throughout if necessary. In charge of sourcing, interviewing and placing candidates for the role so you get to really see each vacancy through and deliver the end result.
So many transferable skills: interpersonal skills, telephone manner, building rapport with candidates, typing and computer efficiency, knowledge of employer's requirements, processes and exactly how to write a really good CV. To have real life context to university teaching is always useful too and something I will use in essays and learning next year for sure.
The Company
Very friendly, everyone has time to help each other. Have a good laugh as well but at the end of the day it is work so sometimes everyone does have to knuckle down and perform, especially during busy periods but even so everyone has time to look out for each other and help each other out if needed.
Follows the grad scheme set up which is really good as we are given real, existing roles that have a genuine use within the business, which I previously thought that placement years don't. As the first placement year for Reed there were a couple of slow days where things were being worked out but the team have improved this massively following our intake.
Receiving initial residential training, opportunities to meet the placement students beforehand, then on the job training as my role is fairly office specific. Then been sent on more residential training courses at the Reed manor, been provided with a mentor, graduate scheme contacts and invited on all of the socials. Lots of online learning that you can complete and online courses if there are any areas that you aren't confident with.

My manager at the end of the year has to confirm that they would employ me again, and a place n the graduate scheme is secured. There are lots within the business to speak with so I have a really good idea about the scheme, the roles available and if it is for me or not.
The Culture
We all trained together initially, keep in contact regularly outside of work and discuss the placement in general too. We meet up at residential training courses, ask each other questions and have all become good friends and connected each other to other people that we know within the Reed business.
Brighton is a really good place to go out and I actually lived at home during the placement as it was an easy commute so the cost of living is'nt something that mattered to me. Socialising is easy as there are loads of places to go and if you know the right ones it can be fairly cheap
As above, there are lots of pubs, clubs and bars in the area to go out to. There is always something going on for each genre of music, as well as places to go for every type of night that you could be after. If you know where to go it can be a good price too.
There are lots of socials designed for the graduates that we regularly are involved with too. Reed have good schemes and discounts available too for all kinds of savings on everyday essentials to food and cinema etc. We also have work nights out where we can socialise more informally .
