The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my 6 weeks at Grant Thornton! My 6 weeks consisted of going down to London for an intern conference for 2 days, going down to Bradenham Manor GT's training facility for 3 days and working in the office the rest of the days. I was allowed to visit clients on their sites to attend quarterly meetings.
Going in to my internship I didn't know anyone, and it was scary at first. However, the other interns had the same nerves as I did and we all introduced ourselves and got to know one another. Over the weeks we became closer and helped one another in day to day tasks and went out for lunches too. At the end of the internship we all felt like a family!
I was allocated a people's manager who was my first point of contact. I emailed my manager back and forth prior to the internship even starting. My manager created a plan for me and informed me of what I needed to bring. Throughout the 6 weeks my manager was very supporting, as well as all other member of staff. Everyone was welcoming and guided me through the internship.
There were 1 or 2 days in the whole 6 weeks in which I felt like I didn't have that much to do. The reason being for that was I had managed to finish up work quickly. Managers and colleagues gave me tasks to do everyday and sometimes the workload did mount up a little, however, it wasn't anything worrying. Also, I was told I wouldn't need to take any work home and I didn't. I was always offered new jobs to do too, so that I could build my experience.
The work given wasn't pointless or extremely easy. The work I got given was challenging but doable. As I was intern there was only so much I can do with the knowledge I had, that's being said I was given a fair amount of responsibilities. I was dealing with clients and HMRC myself.
The skills I have acquired and the training I completed has helped me in my degree and future. I am able to understand theoretical points more in lectures after applying some things in the internship. Moreover, the training has helped me build a foundation and learn the basics so that when I return next year for my graduate job I can pick off where I left.
The Company
The atmosphere in the workplace was not your stereotypical accounting office. The office was full of energy and colleagues working away whilst having chats too with one another. There was a cool vibe across the office. There was plenty of laughter and everyone grinding away. Managers were able to have chilled chats with partners and I was too.
My internship was organised perfectly. I was aware before starting what I would be doing and was sent flight details and dates of which I was out of office. There was an intern conference down in London to welcome the interns across the UK and in the second week there was a training course in High Wycombe. There wasn't a day in which I didn't know what I was doing.
GT invested a lot of time, money and effort in myself and the other interns. I built upon many of my skills and learnt new skills too. I did this through my training workshops in Bradenham Manor and during the 6 weeks overall. I am very grateful for the investment they put in!

I am pleased to say I was offered a graduate job with GT which I have accepted. I was informed by the manager that interns would be offered graduate roles if we worked well. I didn't need to compete against other interns as we had been told there's future jobs for everyone, and everyone got one.
The Culture
Everyone got on very well with one another, there was not a single argument or dispute between anyone. There was a good social scene amongst colleagues. We all went out for lunches every week and had a night out too on the last day to celebrate our graduate job offers.
Grant Thornton's office is located very central in the city centre. It's very convenient as the train station and bust stop is within 2 minutes of walking. For me the cost of living wasn't a lot as I stayed in my house but generally the city centre in Glasgow can be expensive to stay in.
The Glasgow town has an amazing nightlife. There are plenty of bars and clubs to go to. These are all within a mile radius or so to the office. However, none of this affected the company. There are over 8 clubs to go to and you're spoilt with bars and pubs too.
There were many social events that i got invited to by colleagues. I attended a boat trip around loch lomond and a staff night out to celebrate the tac office's 6 months of hard work. As I was only there for 6 weeks there is only so much that I can get involved in. Your personal life and activities don't get affected by the internship.
