The Role
Absolutely loved it, the whole experience was great. I have done a summer internship the year before at another major investment bank in the front office and absolutely hated it. This was professionally run, very structured and every detail was thought through to the very end.
The desk I was on did an incredible job of making me feel at home and integrating me into the team very quickly. Before long I had inside jokes with most of the team and sharing the successes when they made money, whilst also feeling their pain when the markets weren't going well.
There was constant feedback given to me by my MDs and HR whenever I asked, and we had a chance to evaluate our own performance and this was taken into account. This feedback was given every week so there was enough time to improve on things during the internship rather than at the end when it would have been too late.
I think I had the perfect balance of work. I always had something to do, so the day although 13 hours or so, went past extremely quickly and I was never bored looking for something to do. This lasted the entire 9 weeks pretty much.
I was put in solely put in charge of some live projects for important clients from the very start pretty much which was an incredible amount of responsibility and a great feeling that I was trusted so much.
The skills I learnt, both markets related (i.e. about particular asset classes) and about the work environment in general are definitely an incredible asset and help to me. Whilst they will not help me in my degree which is understandable, no matter what careers I go into I am confident this knowledge will help me stand out and do well.
The Company
Was quite lively, some desks more than others. Was asked to go out for drinks a few times.
HR thought of every single details and the whole thing was run very well.
There were quite a few skills sessions and training sessions, although one big disadvantage is that we were not given Bloomberg.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Got a job and would not dream about working anywhere else.
The Culture
Whilst the interns did go out a lot, we did not have the liveliest class, although when you are waking up at 5am everyday that is probably a good thing.
Was average central London prices really, so can't complain.
There were mainly bars and pubs, and Shoreditch was walking distance so it was pretty great.
There were loads of charity projects one could get involved in and we spent one day at a school in East London volunteering.
