The Role
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was very professional and a very safe space. It created a perfect environment for someone new to the industry to learn and grow. There was a lot of enthusiasm around not only the work going on, but in ensuring we as interns were making the most out of our short time in the departments. An open environment where questions were happily received and answered.
In my case the overall Internship was very well organised. I knew from the beginning what departments I would be sending time in, what my role would be stepping into those department and what was expected of me. It was also very flexible and many changes where made to both the longterm and short term details of the schedule depending on where my strengths were best suited and where I felt I hadn't spent enough time. Overall it was planned to ensure that I got the full benefits of the 10weeks.
Having spent 10weeks with the firm, I truly believe that they teach you with the intent of keeping you and your talent within the firm once the internship has ended. They use the 10weeks not only to teach you and to analyse if you would be a good fit for the firm, but to invest in you as a person and allow you to use the time to really create a network within RBC. Crucially they integrate you through the firm - everyone has a vested interest into how you are developing, and this is very important.

Personally I think that RBC provides vast future employment prospects, both lateral and horizontal within the firm. It was very clear to us that you do not have to stick in one career path to do well in the firm, as long as you work hard and have talent that is worth keeping. I saw two examples of Grads that had moved department once starting the firm and were happily progressing. As well as multiple staff having come through the internship process and progressing senior roles. Of course nothing is certain, but they treat their staff as people rather than numbers which is reassuring.
The Culture
We had a very sociable internship class and went out at least once a week for drinks after work and were joined on many occasions by fellow colleagues. There is a good social scene at RBC and we are encouraged to maintain this as a key part of work and life.
The cost of working in London was no different to when my usual cost of living as I live in London. Socialising was brilliant as everything is so accessible when you work in the centre of the city. RBC is currently based near Bank, Mansion house and Cannon street station so is very accessible.
Being in the centre of the city you are very close to a lot of bars and clubs. Only 10 minutes from Liverpool street you are within walking distance from a vast array of Nightlife and restaurants. Both perfect for meeting friends after work and spending time with work colleagues. It is in a brilliant location.
There were some, not a huge amount. But I was aware that over the summer there is not a huge amount on as many people take their time off then, this is the same in all firms. There were activities set up for us as interns which was really fun an allowed us to meet the interns from other departments such as investment banking and operations.
