The Role
Howdens was a great place to do a placement year. I was given a huge amount of opportunities to learn and grow as a project manager.
Colleagues didn't treat me any different anybody else in the office. I felt like any other employee. Except maybe they were a little easier on me if things went wrong :).
My manager was always available to give me guidance or offer suggestions of how I could improve my work. I would often receive hints and tips from people around me if I didn't know the best way to complete a task.
Howdens is a particularly fast paced environment to work in. While I enjoyed the work I was doing, I sure did have a lot of it! However, this forced me into developing better time management skills.
I started with the basic tasks; minute taking, organizing meetings and shadowing colleges. As soon as I was ready, my manager gave me the opportunity to take on new responsibilities from; running meetings, managing large scale project budgets and even running my own business critical project.
Through this placement I was given the chance to complete APM (Association of Project Managers) training course and exam. Meaning I now have an industry recognized Project Management qualification.
The Company
Really good, there were lots of young people to mix with. However, I got along with everyone.
It was very relaxed in terms of structure. I was given the opportunity to take on as much responsibility as I wanted. I just needed to ask. My manager was very trusting in me. This meant I was able to learn at my own pace (Which for me was to dive in at the deep end).
I wad able to do two training courses while as Howdens. One APM is an industry recognized Project Management qualification.
