The Role
Great placement. Really nice and fun team to work with, experiencing something different everyday. Long hours but that is to be expected in the construction industry,
I was part of the team from day one and was valued by everyone from the project manager down. Natural to be given a few boring jobs that others don't want to do.
Given good guidance by team and the subcontractors. Wasn't given a lot of guidance by my supervisor, more of a here is a job work it out approach, but that is likely to be supervisor specific as everyone else was more than happy to explain everything.
Takes a few days or so to get comfortable onsite before being given more responsible. Good balance of being busy but not stressed with a heavy workload.
Given a good level of responsibility, being trusted to do a job, but also supported to make sure mistakes are not make or the task is too difficult.
Construction is different to university life, with uni not preparing you for site work. Learnt a lot that can be used beyond in a grad job and to a lesser extent uni.
The Company
Good friendly atmosphere with a diverse range of people
Well organised, find out if you are given the internship quickly. Lacked a bit of organisation regarding the first day on the job.
No specific training, but you can learn a lot from site.
Financial Bonus
Above 25 days holiday
Good grad scheme, given good level of responsibility with different jobs on different sites over 3 years.
The Culture
Not much of a social scene. Most people drive to work, therefore people wouldn't go for a drink after work. There was a event were the team went out for drinks.
Had to move to manchester for my placement. The accommodation was cheap but I wasn't paid for 6 weeks as I missed the first month payroll and I had to pay rent upfront with a deposit (as well as having paid my deposit for my 3rd year and 4th year house). No accommodation help but get to put travel on expenses.
Its Manchester, but the students had gone.
Being in a city there are opportunities, but all outside of work
