HR intern Review

I enjoyed my summer internship with RBS far more than I expected I would. I was placed within a great team who were incredibly welcoming and supportive. There were great social opportunities for meeting and working with interns in other departments which was great for networking and seeing how other business areas were run.

I felt incredibly valued by my colleagues. They were friendly, supportive and very approachable, whether or not they were in my team. I was given lots of advice and felt as if many of my colleagues were happy to mentor me and give me advice on my projects or career development.

My line manager was absolutely fantastic. He was always willing to show me how to do things, but also had the perfect balance of letting me work things out on my own. Even though he was not in the office every day, he was only ever an email/message away which was great!

I always felt that I was very busy, given the nature of my objectives. Some days were busier than others due to deadlines but there was always something that I had to work on, whether it be work for my team, or work that was specifically for my internship progression.

I felt that I was given a lot of responsibility during my placement but I knew who I could talk to if I ever felt that it was too much or if I was not sure how to handle a certain task which meant that I never felt too overwhelmed.

I learnt so much during my ten week placement that whatever sector I end up in, whether it be right after graduation, or twenty years after, I will most certainly use. I feel very prepared to enter the world of work and feel that I was given good insight into corporate culture.

The atmosphere in my office was very open and relaxed, while being productive. It was the sort of environment where you could take a quick 15 minute break to catch up with a colleague over a coffee or nip away for some fresh air and people were happy that you were taking time for yourself.

I think that the placement was fairly well set up but more guidance could have been given prior to starting. I felt as if I did not know a great deal about what sort of work I would be doing in the internship and maybe could have benefited from some additional insight.

I was given good training and development opportunities and I particularly liked when we worked with interns outside our own team or department so as to gain more of an all round image of RBS. My line manager taught me some important excel skills which I feel are very useful for my career progression.

I have been offered a place on the graduate scheme and given how much I enjoyed my summer placement, I am going to accept the offer. The great working environment and campus were particular highlights and I can really imagine myself working with RBS for the foreseeable future after graduation.

There was a good social scene amongst the other interns. There were some officially organised events in bars which was a great opportunity to mix with all of the interns. Also, because of the canteen set up, it was nice to see people during the day and hear about how they were getting on.

I commuted from Glasgow to Edinburgh everyday via the 900 bus which costs between £32-£40 but did stop right outside Gogarburn which was really useful. In terms of socialising, the organized events tended to be held in reasonably priced venues and we were often given drinks tokens and some free food.

As the internship overlapped with the Edinburgh fringe, the nightlife was really great.

I think this is more catered to the graduate scheme as I think there is a netball team but I am unsure if interns could join.
