    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Overall I enjoyed my work experience at RBC. People often have the opinion that starting out in investment bank is demanding and stressful but that is not the case at RBC. The friendly company culture truly shines through into everyday work and interns are made to feel very welcome by the campus recruitment team and employees of the company in general. There are also many social events organised for the interns which are good fun.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Personally as soon as i joined my team everybody was incredibly friendly towards me. I was welcomed in and started work with the team straight away. I was given challenging work from the start which contributed towards the teams goals so i felt like a fully fledged member of the team very early on. And of course my team gave me help when I needed it.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There was excellent support for me as an intern. Firstly my line manager was incredibly helpful. He would encourage me to ask questions to him and the team so that I could develop my skills. Secondly my technology intern manager was always there if you needed to ask any general questions. He would make sure that he met up with you and the other tech interns on a regular basis. Thirdly the HR recruitment team were always available to answer and queries I had.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • In my first week of the internship I was not that busy as i had not met certain members of my project team. But this week was great for me to do some independent research onto the project i was going to be working on so in hindsight was actually quite helpful. After I had fully settled in I always had something to do.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I think I was given the right amount of independence for an intern. My day to day project was challenging and I was given tasks on the project to complete by myself which surprised me. But there was always help if I needed it and been given independent tasks like this was great for my own learning.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The obvious answer to this is the crucial knowledge of how the financial system works. As I am from a STEM background I had very little understanding of how an investment bank really functions so this knowledge for me is key as there is a lot to understand. Which of course going is key to getting a job in Capital markets

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Friendly atmosphere especially to the interns, grads and apprentices within the office which is great. I was very surprised by this as you always hear about the stressful environments at investment banks. RBC put a huge emphasis on their culture and it does actually shine through the company unlike other companies.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The summer internship program was organised very well. The campus recruitment team were always very organised throughout. On the first day we were all given packs about important events coming up and important office information. We were sent reminders by emails also which was very helpful in your first real world job.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Within the tech department I was given access to online courses for various different tasks. This was pretty helpful if you are working on a task that has an online course directly linked to what you are doing. Also you could complete a lesson for your own development for example if I wanted to complete an online machine learning course I could for an hour in the day. HR did other tasks that helped our personal development for example we had public speaking training which was very helpful. And you were set goals by your manager to reach so you could measure your development.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would say very appealing. I like the culture of the company and the opportunities that are arsing. The Royal Bank of Canada Capital Markets has some exciting long term goals that I would love to be involved with. There also seems to be opportunities to move around to the different locations where RBC operate which appeals to me.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes there was a good social scene. The campus recruitment team did a great job of creating a social environment by organising lots of events early for the interns. Then after a while we all became friends so made our own plans. The only things i would say is that the interns in between markets and back office didn't mix that much.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • In central London there is obviously plenty of things to do in abundance. Such a wide variety of things to do. Most of your friends will work in close proximate as well so there is never a dull moment. Of course it is central London so things can be pricey.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • 3/5
