The Role
Working at Microsoft for the year was amazing! Not only did I learn lots of practical skills, I also learnt lots about myself. Microsoft creates a great learning environment where it's okay to fail which is a refreshing change from the strict rules at university.
My team were amazing! My manager gave me targets to hit so I didn't feel like the intern of the team. Having my own small area was great because it gave me skills in managing towards a target while also giving me room to learn and explore the rest of the business.
Everyone is super helpful and willing to help. No matter the position, I could always find someone to talk to regardless of the issue. Everyone wants to see you do well.
You can have a heavy workload at times, but it all comes down to how you manage your time. I personally struggled with time management at the beginning but quickly learnt the skills and found my day to day life became easier.
I was given my own area to manage. While a niche area, it gave me room to develop my own projects rather than just supporting some.
Everything I learnt at university was used as a foundation. While all basic, it showed me how in practice the theory could be used. Going back to final year I feel much more confident for the assessments ahead.
The Company
Due to the nature of the company, I found most of my team would work remotely most of the week which left very few in my area. Still everyone was always available online to talk to.
The early in career team do a fantastic job to accommodate so many interns. That said, my intern plan fell through a few days into the placement and it took some months to create a new plan.
Everyone is always willing to give some of their time to help you learn and develop. Everyone wants to see you grow.

Microsoft offers a great graduate scheme which can be applied for through the internship for a head start against external applicants.
The Culture
There are lots of different social clubs within interns and the wider company.
In the London area, it is very expensive. The intern wage does reflect this compared to other placements though.
Near Reading university. Lots of places to go and visit and London isn't too far away.
Microsoft were always advertising different clubs/charities to get involved with.
