The Role
Although there were a few times I was on the bench, the work I got to take part in throughout the year was always very interesting. I was treated like a fully fledged employee at all times, and this was both encouraging and excellent for learning experience.
I often hear that Deloitte's key value is its people, and I believe that statement to be absolutely true. My colleagues on all my projects were always extremely talented and friendly, and an absolute pleasure to work with. There was always support when I needed it and I was made to feel like an important team member.
As above, there was always support when I needed it. I always felt supported and guided on my projects, and further to that my coach really helped to make me feel like I had further guidance and direction throughout my year.
Some days were very busy and some days were very slow, but that’s just the nature of consulting projects sometimes. For the most part, my work days felt balanced and I never felt like I was wasting time or going nowhere.
I was given the opportunity to write real code for real systems on real projects. This code obviously had to be fully functional but also needed to meet industry quality standards and be well tested.
I found that what I learned with Deloitte really stayed with me and helped me immensely to complete my degree and attain a 2:1. I was able to put agile methodology into practice during my final project with my team.
The Company
General atmosphere in the Belfast technology studio was perfect. It’s a friendly atmosphere that doesn’t hinder work. It really gives a strong sense of community and reinforces that the team at Deloitte are all extremely friendly, talented people. All my project teams were able to eat good work done in good time without being unfriendly.
I had no serious complaints with the onboarding process or with any requirements throughout. I was able to get up and running on the company’s systems in good time and I always felt that I had direction, due to both good communication from the onboarding team via email and from Ciara Lynch, who looked after us in the office.
The firm gave me a great deal of training, and also provided me with quality hardware. I felt that the firm seriously invested into making me a better person and a better professional, and it really showed. At the end of my placement year I felt that I had grown a huge amount.

Working from home
At the end of my placement year I really felt that I wanted to come back, and I knew I would seek that opportunity. Following my closing interview and receiving an offer to come back, I was delighted. I now work at the firm fill time and I couldn’t be happier.
The Culture
Absolutely. All colleagues were friendly and talkative, and I made some real friends at the firm. My fellow placement students and I became firm friends and our friendship continued into uni. We remain very good friends and now all work at the firm full time. I have also kept many of my friends from Deloitte, even those that have since left the firm
Belfast is a remarkable city to live in, regarding the social scene and the cost of living. We were paid very well for placements students in that area, and I was able to live comfortably throughout the year. There were plenty of opportunities to socialise also that didn’t break the bank.
Nightlife in Belfast is great. There is a wide range of nightclubs and bars to choose from, and within the office team there were plenty of opportunities to go out and enjoy them and to get to know everyone better. Team socials also made good use of the social spots in the city.
As I’ve already stated above, there were plenty of opportunities to go out with team members throughout the year. There are also plenty of clubs and societies to join within Deloitte to meet new people. Further to this, a lot of people in the office liked to participate in things like hackathons.
