The Role
A great overall experience on the internship, which lasted 6 weeks. I did 2 rotations in different Tax streams - Business Tax (Advisory) and Global Employer Services (Mobility). In essence, the internship at Deloitte gave me a great insight into 2 specific areas of Tax. The day to day work was interesting and allowed me to develop my curiosity for Tax.
I felt valued as in intern, who was given real responsibility which allowed me to understand the nature of working in Tax. At Deloitte more broadly, everyone I encountered was extremely pleasant - all the way up to Directors and Partners. All were approachable and delegated me interesting and meaningful tasks.
I was assigned a ‘buddy’ and a ‘champion’ for both of the teams I worked in. The buddy in both teams was an Analyst - both of my buddies were friendly and allowed me to ask any relevant questions I had. Their insight was valuable, providing me genuine info regarding the training and work-life balance. The champion was a Consultant who ultimately collated my feedback. Again, both were incredibly useful and gave me valued feedback.
Never too busy, but always busy enough. I always had multiple tasks to juggle at once, but this was a learning curve in itself as I was able to prioritise according to the deadline/importance. Some projects were large and over many days, but other tasks were smaller admin necessities. If I was quiet, I was proactive in seeking further work from colleagues.
Lots of work was client facing and I was able to draft many pieces of client correspondence. I also attended client meetings and eventually led a section of tax briefings in GES - this was real responsibility that colleagues felt I could handle. I was heavily involved in projects and was able to have an impact on the work.
On a very general level, this work experience was excellent and equipped me with many professional and technical skills that are pertinent to any career. The internship also developed my understanding and interest of Tax and I ultimately received an offer to permanently join Deloitte in 2019. The skills from the internship will undoubtedly put me in good stead as a new starter.
The Company
I had exposure to both the London office and a regional office. Both offices were great working environments but very different. The hot desking system is a great way to speak to different team members on a daily basis. The office felt like a healthy place to work and the environment was calm.
Not too structured, but arranged so that I spent half of my time in two different teams. This was extremely valuable and enabled me to take the most away from the internship. Other than that, there was no real solid plan, but this was good given the fluid nature of Tax projects.
I was paid a generous pro rata salary. Of course, being an internship, I was not invested in in terms of qualifications. That said, Deloitte do support you extremely well on the graduate programme where all study costs are completely covered. I was able to gather a large amount of guidance from colleagues regarding the ACA.

Having been offered a grad position at Deloitte - Tax (2019), I am excited to join next summer. The ACA-CTA 3 year programme is fully costed and a great means to train on the job. Upon completion, one is promoted to the role of Consultants. There is certainly good prospects for promotion at Deloitte, and it is somewhere where you are encouraged to push yourself far and wide.
The Culture
There was a Facebook group and I met with many fellow interns which was great. The London social was of course inevitably better than the regional office, but the teams did still hold frequent social events. These were varied and colleagues always found the team events valuable for team cohesion and morale.
London was of course hugely expensive, but the graduate pay reflects this to some extent. The regional office was an expensive commute for me (£25/day) but ultimately worth it for the experience gained on the internship. Lunch costs were average for the south east. I should also add that I had 2 lunches with a couple of colleagues (which was expensed!)
Not on the internship placement, but as above there are endless opportunities outside of work at Deloitte. These include the Deloitte day, charity outreach schemes, work secondments and sport-social events. Many colleagues are eager to take on these additional activities alongside their work. This demonstrates the culture at Deloitte, where all have a good time.
