The Role
I really enjoyed my internship at Deloitte. Having little experience within the finance industry I didn’t know what to expect but instantly felt welcomed and valued. I enjoyed the variety of work I was doing and felt like I made a real impact. On the whole it was a great experience and one I would strongly recommend!
I felt instantly welcome within the team I was placed with. While initially feeling a little like I was a spare part I quickly settled into my work and got to know them more. They also got to know me and how I work so I received more responsibility and more work. I felt very valued by the team on the whole.
There was a little confusion with regard to who my immediate supervisors were. However this meant that I received advice and help from a lot of different people which was really beneficial. I also worked across several offices and so received a lot of advice and support. I found this very helpful.
I was pretty busy most of the time. Whenever I finished a piece of work I would receive more. Quite often I would have a number of different pieces of work on the go as I awaited client responses so this helped to keep me busy. I felt like I had a challenging but manageable workload.
I felt like I was given a lot of responsibility during my internship. I would be given certain areas of the audit to do myself so had to make sure they were done correctly as there was no one to fall back on. While everything was checked over by a manager I felt I had a lot of responsibility as the process was the same for all members of the team.
Following my internship I have been offered a position on the graduate scheme. Therefore I think the skills I learnt will be invaluable when I start my new job and throughout my career. In my degree studies the skills I learnt have provided a new knowledge and ability to manipulate numbers and use them in my analysis.
The Company
I really liked the atmosphere within the offices I worked in. While everyone was focused on their work there was still time to have fun and a bit of a laugh. Everyone was very friendly and if someone was getting a hot drink everyone would be offered one too. There was a real sense of inclusiveness.
From my experience I would say it was very well organised. My team was relatively small but my managers coordinated so as to ensure I was placed on suitable projects with enough work to do. I spent quite a lot of time at client sites away from home and these were all well organised.
I think the firm invested in me a lot. While the impact I made to them was probably not huge I feel like their willingness to accept untrained and unqualified students and train and help them gain skills etc. Was extremely beneficial. They were always very willing to answer any questions I had about work but also about the process as a whole.
National Travel
Very appealing. I have been offered a graduate job which I intend to accept. I feel the training and support I will receive will be very good. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the team and cannot wait to start work next year. They seem to have very good benefits once in full time employement and many opportunities to gain a wide range of experience.
The Culture
Since I was away from home for a majority of my placement I spent a lot of time with my colleagues as we stayed in hotels and rentals together. This meant it was very social as everyday we’d have breakfast and dinner together and relax in the evenings. I felt very welcomed at these social events.
As we were away for most of the time it was all covered by expenses so all I had to pay for was my rent which I would have paid anyway. Food and drinks were normally covered and all transport and accommodation was too. This was particularly good for me as a student.
I worked between Bristol and Cardiff both of which have very good nightlife’s. We spent a lot of time in north wales at client sites mostly in the country side so the nightlife here was pretty nonexistent.
As I was living in my university flat there were lots of things to do outside of work which I had time to do on weekends. While away I was able to meet family and friends who were in the area in the evenings. There was time in evenings to do whatever you chose.
