The Role
I really enjoyed my time at Fidelity International. The internship gave the right balance of guiding me where I needed while at the same time giving me the freedom to have autonomy over my work. The general atmosphere at Fidelity is lovely with people always willing to help and work cooperatively together.
I felt very valued by my colleagues and within a week or so there felt like part of the team I was in (invited out for post work drinks and team building evenings). It never felt that I was unwanted there with everyone taking the time to introduce themselves and explaining what their role was in the company alongside how I could help them out.
My supervisor gave me an amazing amount of support. If I was ever stuck I always felt that I could send an email asking for clarification or talk with him face to face on where I was going wrong. It was lovely to feel that during my time there someone had so much faith in my ability.
I was busy most days. There were a few where I was given more work or an unexpected amount and other days when I had completed tasks and had more minor things to complete, but generally speaking it was a nice level of not being bored and not being overwhelmed.
I really enjoyed the level of responsibility that I was given. Although I had tasks outlined to me, how I went about completing them and getting them done was mostly my own choices and how I presented my work again was my own choice. I felt that what I was doing was helpful to the company as opposed to menial tasks.
I think that the biggest skills I have learnt from my internship are more regarding time management and also public speaking. I was pushed to speak to a large number of people which I now have a lot more confidence in, this is a skill I will carry with me for life.
The Company
The general atmosphere was very positive within my office. People were relaxed and never lost their temper with one another. There was a definite collaborative feel to the office whereby it was actively encouraged to ask for help from colleagues who may have had greater expertise in an area. Most people seemed to have genuine friendships with their colleagues.
Was well organised. We had regular socials which allowed us to get to know the other interns which was lovely as it meant we gained friendships. We also had bi-weekly lunch and learns which were presentations from various areas within the business. These were amazing as it was so interesting to have talks from some industry experts.
I think the company invests a lot into its interns. They seem keen on giving constructive feedback and also helping you to grow in the areas that you would like. Many people within the company give up their own time to talk to the interns during the lunch and learns which I think shows the aim to foster interns who know about all the areas of the company and not just their own.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
I will be joining Fidleity International full time when I finish university this summer. I am highly excited to begin my career with them and feel that they will be an amazing company which will allow me to grow to my full potential. I am extremely glad I did an internship with them.
The Culture
Yes there was a good social scene. For the interns we had three socials organised for us, including going to a bar and an arcade. Only issue in the Surrey office is that many people drive and there are no bars in walking distance thus, there isn’t really a post work drinks culture.
Cost of living was cheaper when in Surrey but when I was working in the London office then London living prices are obviously present which can be quite expensive to navigate. For both offices I could commute from home so can not really comment on rental costs, but Surrey is cheaper as there is a subsidised canteen.
When working in Surrey I did not go out in the area that was local to the office however you can quickly get to London on a train where the nightlife is far far better and very enjoyable. Overall as I often commuted into Surrey I can not comment on the nightlife there.
We had a day volunteering as part of our scheme which was enjoyable and I know the company organises volunteering days for non-interns also. There was also company yoga, fitness sessions and softball competition while I was there so all in all I think there were a number of activities to get involved in.
