The Role
I enjoyed my year and found the experience gained to be very useful. Not only in terms of within the corporate environment and the business I operated in, but also translating to my studies and other areas of corporate finance. I would definitely recommend a placement and/or work opportunity here.
I felt as though I was valued by my team and was treated exactly the same as the graduate intake in the same year. We were given equal responsibility and I was most definitely stretched. I also found that I was more valued as the year went on and I gained more insight.
This varied with the project I worked on, some senior staff were far more attentive than others so I have mixed reviews on this topic. At its best, senior staff would often check up on me and give regular feedback but there were other times where I was more left to my own devices but the same results were expected.
This varied, mainly dependent on the project I was working on and the business of the department in general. However, I'd say that on average I was busy but not over worked - which is a level I am happy about. Moreover, If you are having a quiet time there is always more work to be done.
In terms of responsibility given from the offset I was treated exactly the same as the graduate intake in the same year. We were given equal responsibility and I was most definitely stretched. I also found that I was more valued and was given more responsibility as the year went on and I gained more insight.
The skills I gained are overall very translatable. I built on technical skills that are very current, such as programming and more general computer skills as well as building on my soft skills and learning to deal with people of different levels of seniority. All skills that would put me in good stead on completing my studies as well as re-entering the working world.
