The Role
Very much enjoyed being part of a team and given multiple tasks to work on. Networking with other teams also gave me a chance to take on more and different types of work.
I felt more valued as time went on, however, the training and help that you get from the start shows that it is within your colleagues best interests to train you as efficiently as possible.
My manager checked in with me most days to see how things were going, eventhough she was very senior and was always busy.
Most days I had tasks to do that would push me towards completing my project however some days were obviously busier than others. If I had a quiet day I would take the time to do extra online training or organise shadowing with other interns/teams.
I was given as much responsibility as I could have been given at that stage in time. I had a project that was mine to manage and had to present to the managing director of my team a number of times. I also took on various tasks for other teams that were used in management team meetings.
Most skills learnt were more life skills and business knowledge. Some IT skills such as VBA could be useful but not particularly for my degree.
The Company
My floor was normally quite quiet but this is normal through the summer months. Most people would come in and get on with their job and sometimes we would go for a team lunch or social after work but this varies depending on the team.
The internship was organised very well and I always knew what opportunities were available to me and what events I could attend. There were midpoint and end of internship reviews so that you constantly knew how you were doing and there were speaker events set up with senior employees aimed to inspire the next young leaders.
They invested incredibly well. Employees from all over the bank were more than happy to take out the occasional 30 minutes or 1hour to discuss roles, careers goals, skills, etc.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing for graduate roles.
The Culture
Vey good social scene, maybe too good...
London
There is no nightlife in canary wharf, however, there are bars that get packed after work on sunny days and the Jubilee line has good links to central London for nightclubs.
There was an organised charity day where all interns helped a local organisation with a project, for example, planting trees or painting fences. There was also the opportunity to participate in the J.P.Morgan Corporate Challenge. I also played golf and cricket for the JP Morgan teams.
