The Role
There were great staff in my office to work with leading to a really good working environment. There were also two projects which I was privileged to work on as they offered me great knowledge in the construct industry as they required me to be hands on and also in the office workplace.
I was in a really friendly environment in the workplace and I played a crucial role on the site I’d been allocated to. I was valued highly on the site as I was in charge of all purchasing of equipment and materials needed on site, ranging from site welfare to construction plant.
I was taught how to use software needed on site and involved with the site engineer to help complete tasks. This software enabled me to purchase the equipment which was really useful, other software such as CAD and project wise was also crucial in the workplace, I was taught to use these by my supervisor.
I always had a list of tasks which needed completing, prioritising importing tasks to ensure the delays were minimal. My day consisted of performing inductions to new employees in the construction sites, organising files stored on the site, helping the engineer perform engineering duties which required on the sites, buying materials and plant which were also required.
Due to being the buyer on the site, the responsibility to purchase the correct items and equipment was up to me, ensuring the equipment was delivered on time was crucial as delays of these would cause big issues and could be costly in the long run. The engineer relied on my also to help with surveying of the site.
Although the things I learnt on site were useful, the majority of knowledge Iv gained will not be required for my degree studies. However when I complete my degree and get in the work field, the general knowledge I have gained from being on a construction site will be crucial!
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was really good due to the staff being really friendly, this made the workplace a really good place work and complete tasks. Having friendly staff also made the experience of going to work really enjoyable and I would recommend this company to anyone thinking of joining.
The workplace was organised very well as I was always based on a site which required me to be involved, however I had to travel quite a distance to site so it would have been preferred if the site I was located on were closer to the place I was staying.
The company invested a lot in me through the training I was provided. This training enabled me to become a better employee as I was more useful in the workplace. I was enabled to undergo all the training needed for me and more, making me a more valuable employee on site.
Above 25 days holiday
Travel loan
I am very interested in retiring to JN Bentley after I have completed me degree at Liverpool John moores university, the opportunity to undertake the graduate scheme is very appealing as I would like to progress through my career to the best I can be, hopefully being able to undertake a masters degree in civil engineering.
The Culture
The living costs in the area I relocated were very feasible and it was convenient for the head office for work, only being a few miles away from the main office the travel times were reduced. There were plenty of shops nearby in the town which made the entertainment side much better.
I was involved with an event for Christmas outside of work, this involved going out for dinner and a few drinks afterwards. The placement year would have been better if there were more opportunities to get involved with socialising outside of the workplace but due to age differences this was made more difficult.
