    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at J.P Morgan Chase. The team I was assigned to were very nice. First day in, they introduced me to the JPM system specific to the desk I was working to. Therefore, I dived into the work very quickly and effectively. Not only so, even though I was working with 4 VPs, they did put in the time and effort to walk me through the most basic of concepts.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleagues. Even though I was just an intern there for 10 weeks, I was given real work and given the opportunity to lead on one of the projects I was doing. This project allowed me the opportunity to designate work to even the my team leader (who was an ED).

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My direct line manager was very helpful from day 1. He gave me to opportunity to speak to multiple desks in search for one that I was very interested in (this would be helpful if you had thought about doing a full graduate scheme with JPM). My line manager set me up with roughly about 4 other VPs, who then connected me to associates and analysts.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I believe that at a company of the size of JPM, I went in thinking I would be staying till 2am in the morning. However, that was definitely not the case. The work was manageable if you put in the time and effort into it. If you had more meetings during the day then maybe you would be more busy with work. However the meetings are set by you, therefore you are in charge of how busy you get. If you were to not have any - meetings all day and solely focus on work- it would be very easily managed.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During the start of my internship I was given quite a bit of work that I took lead on. They started out as simple and quick projects that could be finished within a couple of days. However, by week 5 I was asked to take on a larger role on the team and lead on a project that had me designate work to even the most senior person on my team.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • During my internship at JPM, the first week we were given a 5 hour condensed course on Excel- which was incredibly useful because everybody had just started work and all of us required the necessary Excel skills for the remainder of the internship. Not only so, everyday you would meet with so many people (especially senior colleagues) therefore the networking skills built is definitely very useful.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere my office was very good. Even though I was on a trading floor, it was buzzing of energy. There wasn't as much yelling as I thought there would be, like in the movies. There were a lot of room on the floor so all you could really hear were discussions and trades being made. Honestly a great atmosphere to work in!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was set up nicely. On the first day of work we had a huge induction with all the interns in London, as well as so many socials- which was all organised incredibly well. I think what JPM could improve on would be their talks on turning the internship onto a full graduate scheme. I believe we weren't given enough information on that.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company 100% invested a lot of training. We were given a 5 hour crash course on Excel with a company which focuses on training people in big investment bank, such as JPM. The session had roughly around 30 people in it, each had a notepad, laptop, a laminated short cut sheet, etc.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • It is definitely very appealing to gain a future employment with JPM. I think all interns came in wanting a full time employment opportunity with JPM. The company did advertise it very well. We were given talks by [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] and our EMEA CEO/ CFF. The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes 100%. Even if you were busy after work- because you may have needed to stay to do extra there were fixed social with the other interns during your internship. We had one in the beginning of the internship after our induction days, a mid- intern social and a final social.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London is known to be one of the most expensive places to live in. I definitely spent a lot of money on getting drinks at the bars near work just because I needed to network a little bit more. The location of JPM was quite good (canary wharf) so you could live south of london which was a lot more cheaper then zone1.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I wouldn't say there was a nightlife in canary wharf. But there are definitely several bars and pubs you could go to until closing time. However, there weren't cheap at all and were all quite formal. Therefore, it was more of a networking/ catching up with your colleagues than anything.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We were given the opportunity to join BRGs which were groups/ society's. They had regular meetings and events. The most popular ones were the LGBTQ+ and Women on the move. I joined a couple just to gain a better understanding of how to network outside of your desk, they were a lot of fun!
