The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement as MSD provides a very supportive environment to aid your learning and development. The support I received from colleagues helped me integrate quickly in the team and work on my personal and professional development.
My colleagues were not only supportive of my learning but also values my opinions and ideas. As I was involved with certain projects, other would seek my help regarding my area of work, which means I was contributing towards real, impactful projects.
I could get as much or little support as I needed. If I was dealing with a challenging project and I needed extra support I could always ask for it and my manager was always happy to answer all my questions. Similarly, if I wanted to use my initiative and wanted bit more freedom I could ask my manger if I can deal with the situation myself first. The weekly one to one meetings with my manger were a great way to track my progress.
I spent some time in the beginning to familiarise myself with the company procedures and regulations. I was introduced to my project quite early and was given good amount of responsibility. At times I would get quite busy (which I loved) and at other times my work load was small. However, I could always find something to keep myself busy.
I believe I was given a fair amount of responsibility. I was involved with projects which had a direct impact on the business and I also supported the routine manufacturing activities on site.
MSD provides a very friendly and relaxing environment for your personal and professional development. I gained invaluable transferable skills which have not only helped with my research project but also with my other placements. At the end of my placement with MSD I was a lot more confident than I was when I started the placement.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was very friendly and casual. Everyone at MSD is incredibly nice and approachable.
My placement was well organised with some projects we discussed in the beginning along with opportunities to get involved with other pieces of work I was interested in.
It was not just my manger who cared about my learning and development but everyone at MSD was incredibly supportive and were willing to take some time if I needed any help or support. My colleagues were always happy to answer any questions I had.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
MSD is a great place to work and the future employment prospects are quite good.
The Culture
It was great having other placement students around. We would go for lunch together and get involved with activities outside work.
The cost of living and socialising is very reasonable.
I am not really keen on the stereotypical 'night life' however, Newcastle is supposed to be a great city for nightlife.
There were a lot of opportunities to get involved with a range of activities in Newcastle. Everyone can find things to get involved with based on their interests.
