The Role
While at J.P.Morgan, I was able to learn a lot with my team and all the colleagues that accompanied me throughout the internship. Apart from that, I also had an amazing time outside work in London with all the people I met from work.
I believe I felt like family while at J.P.Morgan, not only because my team trusted my work and I thought I could discuss any concern with them, but also because my colleagues were constantly giving me feedback for my work, which showed appreciation for my improvement.
I was constantly shadowing my manager's tasks so that I could replicate and/or assist him the best way I could. My manager's kept giving me feedback so that I could do better each week. Regarding the human resources team, they have always been supporting and gave me online e-learning courses.
My daily schedule was very balanced and structured. In the morning I did reports for a team and in the afternoon I worked with the New York team. When I had free time, I developed some other longer term projects. Even though the job was a bit stressful and fast passed (especially during the afternoon) I rarely left the office after 7 p.m..
I felt that as time went by I was progressively given more and more responsibility. Together with another colleague from the NA team, we were actually in charge for most of my team's tasks while they were on holidays for two weeks. I felt I had a lot of responsibility which enabled me to learn a lot and develop time management skills.
I think I will use the technical skills during my studies in finance courses and my excel skills will help me with most of my projects. However, I am taking an Economics Masters, which uses more economic models and other software.
The Company
Even though no one had much time to have fun, there were always moments when we chatted and have some food together that someone brought from holidays. Also, once a month my team uses to go for lunch and sometimes for drinks.
It was very well organized. We received constant emails with the next steps for placement and reminders and I always had someone to ask for questions. Besides, there was online training prior to the internship with technicalities about finance which was very useful.
I was given a lot of training prior and during the internship with online training, webinars and seminars. Regarding team tasks, I was also constantly learning new processes and concepts with my team and colleagues.
Company Parties/Events
I think that the company is very supportive open with regards to advice on future prospects. However, I believe that in Finance in specific the career progress is very structured and I do not know if it possible to easily move to another division or location inside J.P.Morgan.
The Culture
Totally. We had three social events in two months organized by the human resources team, which were excellent opportunities to meet the other interns. Also, I was able to meet the other interns and colleagues outside work which enable me to build strong friendships and networks.
Coming from Portugal, London is a very expensive city, both for living and socializing costs, despite the high salary. I needed to be careful with the money I spent because I also wanted to save some for myself.
The nightlife in London has a lot of bars and clubs for young people with amazing people and music. I always felt safe and there were always buses to come back home.
Even though there were not many activities organized by J.P.Morgan, London has many museums, tours, restaurants, bars, etc. I always had something to do during the weekend with the other interns and friends.
