About You
The insight day at M&G was incredibly useful in proving a very broad and easily-understood overview of the asset management sector, as well as a very detailed and honest representation of the day-to-day responsibilities of various roles at the company.
Despite being only a second-year undergraduate student, I felt incredibly valued and respected throughout the insight day. It was frankly somewhat shocking that high management at the company were willing and happy to talk to students and answer all questions as if the latter were colleagues!
I received incredibly detailed and honest advice during the insight day, that often surpassed the level and quality I received during specialist careers guidance appointments. I was particularly impressed by the provision of careers advice that often goes beyond the scope of the roles available in the asset management sector.
The advice I received with regards to career planning and progression was fantastically informative and honest. I also really enjoyed the "trading exercise" activities, which both demonstrated and helped develop skills that are vital in asset management and trading. The activity was also very informative in showing us the type of investing strategy employed by M&G.
The Company
The insight day was very well structured and organised in terms of timing. The inclusion of many different activities, each typically less than an hour in duration, meant that I was very easily able to maintain focus throughout the day without ever becoming bored. The variability of these activities meant that the remained "fresh" and my curiosity to learn more was maintained throughout the day.
In my opinion the atmosphere during the insight day had the perfect balance of formal respectability and informal reliability. I felt respected and valued throughout the day, yet it was very easy to relate and ask questions to all staff and guests present. Some students even felt comfortable enough to crack some (admittedly terrible) jokes during the discussion events.
With consideration to the fact that we were undergraduate guests at the firm for a one-day insight programme, I felt that M&G invested an incredible amount of resources and time in order to provide us an informative and enjoyable day.
Part of the insight day was a networking event which allowed us to talk to current employees, who provided us with a very detailed and honest accounts of daily responsibilities in various roles within the company.
The general atmosphere of the insight day, the panel discussions, and the questioning of current employees at the company provided us with an very accurate insight into the company's culture and ethical framework.
The content was very valuable in helping me decide possible career paths in both the asset management sector to which M&G is a part, but also in other financial services roles.
Everything Else
I was a part of a one-day undergraduate insight event rather than an internship, so payment was impossible. However, we were provided lunch and refreshments throughout the day.
There was extensive networking opportunities throughout the day, with a wide host of current employees in various different role.
The networking events provided excellent opportunities to talk to current employees and gain contact details on networks such as LinkedIn.
There was extensive information on both social and charity events employees are able (and encouraged) to partake in outside work.
I would absolutely recommend the insight day to any friends regardless of whether they are interested in asset management.
