The Role
I had a wonderful time on my placement as a Legacy Events Delivery Inter - the team are wonderful to work with and really encapsulate and mirror wider CRUK values. Extremely varied internship with the chance to go and participate in many different types of events run by the legacies team.
I constantly felt valued and needed at work. I was often given responsibilities outside of my internship which made me feel like a really valued and necessary member of the team. I have been trusted to do the work given to me and am not pestered by my manager in any way.
My team were amazing on this front. My manager was incredibly supportive and having been on this internship himself a few years ago could really empathise with my situation. I was also provided with another mentor on the team which was an extra level of support that many other interns didn't receive. Even senior managers in the team would offer advice and guidance on writing CVs and cover letters and general interview prep.
The workload tends to vary and fluctuate in this role. The start of the internship was quite busy which was out of the ordinary amongst the cohort in general. I have never been out of work however and am constantly utilised - from November onwards the days are incredibly busy as we start working towards putting on the two events which can be quite overwhelming at first.
One thing i have struggled with slightly is the fact that you come into the role once the event has been fully planned so it is quite hard to feel as if you have any huge influence over what happens. With that being said, i am always given extra bits of work and other responsibilities such as creating a report to be reviewed by the senior manager and presenting in front of the larger department. Being given work like this always makes me feel valued and like the more senior staff trust me enough to give me this responsibility.
I do not foresee a future in events for myself but i will be coming away from this internship with a huge set of highly cultivated transferable skills. My communication skills were highly developed before this internship, but have evolved significantly throughout the course of my time here; i will be coming away form this with some really impressive examples of communication skills and stakeholder management / interaction.
The Company
10/10 a wonderful place to work. I felt welcomed from day one and like a part of the team. The organisation as a whole is such a friendly place to be and makes coming into work every day a real joy. Something particularly special about working here is the fact that everyone is quite similar in that we all have the qualities necessary for working within the third sector and are all equally as passionate about achieving CRUK aims.
Very well organised by dint of the fact that it is an internship run by an events delivery team. This is not to say that the internship was in any way rigid or restrictive - I was constantly given the freedom to engage in personal development opportunities and was always encouraged to fill up my calendar with things. I was never told how to structure my day or what work to do when and was largely left to plan my own time amongst a few more fixed deadlines. This internship has been running for years and is incredibly well oiled.
Personal Development opportunities are second to none here at CRUK, i think it would be hard to find even a graduate scheme that offers this much support and help. We are always encouraged to seek out opportunities and talk to as many people as possible to get a rounded view of the organisation. Something particularly noticeable is how honest and open CRUK is about how much they want you to stay. They very obviously invest a lot in their interns with the hope and intention that we will stay, thanks in part to the CRUK lead developmental opportunities that are signposted our way.

A lot of interns would love to stay, it is simply a matter of finding the right job. Exec / entry level roles do come up quite a lot but it depends a lot on luck as to whether you are around when the jobs are opening up. In terms of desirability though, this is a fantastic place to work that is very focussed on you making the most of personal development opportunities to progress through the organisation.
The Culture
Interns were quite sociable towards the beginning of the internship, however once it started getting dark earlier things naturally slowed down a bit. It was always quite hard to get the interns together in one huge group but there were definitely lots of times when we met up in smaller groups.
Generally normal prices that you can expect from zone 1 / London in general. Lots of places nearby offer discounts for staff though.
Angel is a great place to work and is lively and vibrant long into the evening. There are so many choices of bars and pubs to go to and many offer a discount to CRUK staff. The same can be said for the variety of restaurants that can be found within 10 minutes walk from the office.
Lots of opportunities to volunteer after work which i really appreciated. I was able to collect cash for Stand Up To Cancer, volunteer at YouTube before the SU2C live show and signed my name up to be on a list of possible volunteers for other major CRUK events. Any events run by the organisation also always seek volunteers in CRUK staff which is a really great opportunity to get involved in something different.
