The Role
The summer internship, which lasted for 2 months, was a very enjoyable experience. I had the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects, which were always interesting and tested my ability. During this internship I learnt a lot and I had the opportunity to interact with bright and like-mind individuals which I really enjoyed.
I was made to feel very valued during my time spent at the Bank of England. I had the opportunity to present my work to a senior colleagues and my work was appreciated and praised by my manager. The work that I completed added value to the team and I enjoyed being able to make a meaningful contribution.
My line manager did a great job of providing support and guidance during my time on the summer internship. There were a number of 'formal checkpoints' throughout the internship, including a mid-internship and end-of internship review. Furthermore, I had frequently one to ones with my manager and I always felt I could approach him for ad-hoc questions and advice.
On a day to day basis, I was relatively busy- always enough for me to do, but never overwhelming levels of work! I had a healthy work life balance during my time on the internship and I was never pressured to stay late or arrive ridiculously early. Overall, I felt there was a good balance at Bank of England.
I was being given a good level of responsibility during my time at Bank of England, definitely more than I was expecting! This provided me with the opportunity to demonstrate what I was capable of and offered a great learning experience. Whilst I had a lot of responsibility, I always felt that I could turn to my manager for advice and guidance.
I am certain that the skills I developed will assist me greatly in the future! I was exposed to senior leaders within the Bank, who I learnt a great deal from. Furthermore, I learnt how to draft policy briefing, write concise meeting minutes and how to communicate effectively in an professional environment.
The Company
There was a really great general atmosphere within the offices. The atmosphere was very welcoming and I was instantly put at ease. With a large graduate/intern intake, there was a good social aspect to this internship also! My team would frequently joke around while also getting the work done which made for an enjoyable but rewarding environment.
The internship was well organised. The HR team communicated the details of the programme to us well in advance, meaning that I could prepare adequately before starting at the Bank. We had a comprehensive induction programme during the first couple of days and my team had organised interesting projects for me to work on.
The Bank invested a great deal into us. There were plenty of opportunities for training:, ranging from online training to on site training. I was able to attend about various different Bank seminars which were run by experts, while HR set up some insight seminars with different business lines. I was provided with a laptop for the duration of the internship and there is a vast amount of resources available in order to learn.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Following my summer spent at the Bank of England, I was offered a full time position upon my graduation from university and I believe the job prospects to be very good at the Bank! There are plenty of development opportunities and I am very much looking forward to starting my career there!
The Culture
Due to the large number of graduates and interns at the Bank, there was a good social scene throughout the summer internship. The HR team organised an initial social event, where the summer interns had the opportunity to get to know each other better. Following on from that, we made an effort to have lunch together most days, as well as going out for drinks etc. in the evenings.
As I was based in London, the cost of living is expectedly high, however, I was paid a reasonable salary and I was able to find a somewhat decent priced flat for the summer. Furthermore, there is a subsided canteen at the Bank of England, which helps to keep cost down.
As I was based in Central London (right in the heart of The City), there is a great nightlife! There are plenty of bars and restaurants near-by and there is never a shortage of new places to try. Furthermore, it is very easy to get to different areas of the city from the office.
Yes, there are lots of different opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work!
