About You
I really enjoyed the insight! I found the atmosphere of the firm wonderful and the quality of work/clients very high. The effort that was put into the organising of the scheme made me feel like Hogan Lovells had really thought about us as individuals (from the small touch to us being paired with a mentor from our University) and to having a broad range of events to complement all our interests.
The work that I was asked to do made me really feel like a valued member. In Real Estate, I was searching for a deed from the 20's to help with a case. Then I did research for the Hogan Lovells Birmingham branch which was very rewarding as my research helped the client. I wrote a case summary for Energy which was published in the firm's journal so I felt like I was taken seriously. The resources the firm poured into us - from Commercial Awareness, Finance etc. it helped us all feel that we were being cared for and that they wanted us to grow and enjoy the experience.
The perfect amount! My supervisors were all approachable and set a good level of work that was achievable yet demanded time and thought. I loved that we had trainee mentors we could ask help from and the PA's were all so wonderful in providing any support. For the group presentation, it was great that we had an Associate just to help us organise our thoughts.
It's made my degree feel a lot more tangible. I remember doing Land Law last year and wondering when priority rules would ever be used etc. Seeing all the words and concepts that we studied being applied helped remind me of the bigger picture when studying. It's very easy to get lost in theoretical debates, but seeing the law applied in real-life with companies we read about in the newspaper made it a lot more relevant and exciting i.e. it was great to get me excited and remain motivated through my final year!
The Company
Fantastically. I loved that we had 3 weeks - one week in a different 'seat'. It was great to have exposure to different teams as the micro-culture is slightly different in each one and it gave me insight an area of practice I had never really considered. The balance between social and work was great - lots of fun and there were plenty of opportunities to meet and spend time with the recruitment team, partners, associates, trainees and out fellow vac-schemers.
Very enjoyable! Each and every person I interacted with at Hogan Lovells was approachable and polite and many took the extra time to explain to me their role and responsibilities within the firm. I really liked that the recruitment team never made us feel like we were competing with out fellow vac schemers, so we were all able to authentically and genuinely get to know each other.
They invested a lot! From ensuring that we were able to make the most of our time there i.e. meeting as many Hogan Lovell employees. The work that went into developing and broadening our understanding of case studies, advocacy and commercial law etc was very rewarding! They also were good at showing us how they will continue to invest in us as trainees - through BaSE, secondments etc.
It really provided a good understanding. They showed us the workload and the fact we were paired with Associates made us see how much work and pressure they're under.Unfortunately, I realise our hours aren't going to be as short as they were on the scheme but I think we were at least able to see what we've signed up for by talking to the employees.
It definitely helped me get an understanding of the company culture. I was surprised that there was a different sub-culture in each department. I had presumed that there would be a lot of competitiveness, but I really liked that everyone I interacted with put the firm and it's clients needs first - thus providing a very collaborative environment.
The workload, case studies and lunches etc all helped me confirm that corporate law is what I would love to do. I enjoyed the work and responsibility given to me by my supervisors. I enjoyed feeling part of the hustle and bustle of London and I liked the conversation at lunch - the atmosphere is stimulating and exciting.
Everything Else
Completely paid adequately! The amount was more than enough to cover transport, food etc on the scheme and I had a lot that I could save.
Yes, very many. From partner lunches, to grad recruitment social activities and activities that facilitated and encouraged mingling with out trainees and fellow vac schemers! I found many of the employees to be open and available for coffees etc.
Really great. The Thames 'cruise' was awesome. The darts provided a fun and friendly competitive atmosphere which really created a good space to meet the trainees and our fellow vac-schemers. The partner lunches were amazing as we could have an informal and relaxed discussion with partners in other practices and hear their stories of the firm.
Yes, I heard about football etc. I did hear something of a netball club but this wasn't very actively advertised. However, this could be because the gym was being renovated and perhaps meetings or fitness occurred there.
Completely! Everything about it made me feel 100% sure I would want to work as a corporate lawyer in London and at Hogan Lovells. The recruitment team is fantastic! They were so approachable and organised and I felt that we were very well looked after. It was a great introduction to our future lives!
