The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement. I was quickly assimilated with colleagues and was eased into the job well. I didn't feel out of my depth. The work load was well managed by my line manager and as I gained confidence with my decisions and workload, I was given more responsibility and eventually felt my part of the project I was involved in was valued and an important aspect of the project. In addition, I felt that I have gained a lot of site experience, very quickly. This paired with training courses, my understanding of the construction industry, health and safety etc. has heightened.
I felt valued within my place of work and colleagues. Not only within work but outside. The social aspect added to the feeling of being valued as now i don't just feel like I'm helping a colleague to get the project done, but working with mates together to achieve a shared goal.
The guidance and support i was given by my line manager was second to none. They were really helpful and wanted me to get the most out of my placement. Giving me the tools i need to learn and achieve the tasks they set out to me.
It would fluxuate, Some weeks i would be flat out working. and others, i would be asking for work as i did not have much on. But it taught me to be proactive. When i was not given work, i was asking and looking for it. And the company was excellent in allowing me to have the flexibility for me to do so.
Responsibility increased throughout my placement. And it was the right amount to learn, but not too much as to where i am unable to complete my task.
The training I received was first class. Could not fault it. But what i will take the most is Time Management. Its cliché, but it really is. It wasn't just work i juggled but managing a work/life balance was difficult. Waking up early, Exercise, Eating a balanced diet was a challenge but achievable. However now i will take on this good routine into my final year studies. Compaired to my previous years of waking up late, eating junk, not exercising, sleeping late, i am looking forward to feeling healthier and studying the same hours as i did in my placement. To further this, after completing my studies, I will continue to keep the lifestyle as it is I am more productive now than i ever was.
The Company
Great atmosphere. Fun, hard working an helpful. I did not feel like I couldn't go up to someone and ask for help. everyone was very welcoming and had time to share their knowledge.
It was organised very well. But i learnt that they help set you up in your placement, and it is down to you to get what you want out of it. You don't ask, you don't get.
The company invested a lot into my personal training and development. For the first 6 month i had training at least once a month, teaching me confined spaces, working at height, health and safety etc. Not only this, teaching me how the industry works and what the proper channels are to approach a task.
Travel loan
They are very appealing. If i get offered to come back i will.
The Culture
Every week there was something happening at the company. On top of this, meeting up with colleagues outside work was very frequent.
Rent varied. But in general it was low compared to most places.
Very good.
There was not much outside of work. But you have to be pro active and search. THey don't come to you. you got to go to them.
