The Role
I am really enjoying my placement and am surprised at the amount of responsibility I have. The entire placement is on site which I think is useful to know. My work is varied despite working predominantly in the water sector, which I find very interesting. The site I work on for the majority is quite big (reservoir) and it is great to be involved with such an interesting project.
I feel as most people on site value my work on site but are also very helpful for my growth as an engineer as the site team understand it is a learning progress and the more experience and knowledge I can gain, makes me more useful when I am asked to do tasks.
At the beginning I was given a fair amount of guidance from my site manager. However, it didn't take long for a lot of responsibility to fall on me. Personally, I think it is better this way as I feel it massively helps me develop my skills and adapt to different situations.
I am always kept busy when working. Originally, I would have a set of tasks given to me to complete. Now, I am more aware of the tasks that need to be done and therefore am able to set my own daily tasks to ensure everything that needs to be done is completed. As well as this, I am made aware of any outstanding tasks that need to be done.
At the beginning of the placement I was given less responsibility and was guided on what to do and how to do them. As my placement continued I was given more and more responsibility and given more tasks. As well as this I complete tasks with less guidance as it is expected of me to fully contribute to the site team.
I have developed many skills in my time with JN Bentley. As it is often required of me to communicate with members of our company as well as suppliers etc. My communication skills have developed. As well as this, I feel that my engineering knowledge has become a lot more practical and will help me for my final year of university. Also I completed the relevant courses to obtain my CSCS card and clean water card.
The Company
The atmosphere in the site office is very good, it is generally a happy place to be. Despite this, a lot of work is done and tensions can sometimes be a bit high when key parts of the project are in process of completion but this is to be expected.
It was organised at first as all of the placement students arrived in the office for an induction and received all of the required equipment such as laptops. We were then told to head out to go straight on site after being given our PPE. As I was wearing office clothing I was not totally dressed appropriate for going on site so I advise that you take site clothing with you as well just in case.
As soon as I started working for the company, I noticed that the company to invest a lot of time to me. As well as this, they have sorted out a few different training courses for me. Firstly, the CSCS card is a requirement in order to work on a site hence I had to do the required course to obtain this. As well as this, I obtained a clean water card for clean water site which I also attended a course for.
It is very appealing to work at this company after my placement as they are a growing company and I believe will help me develop my skills and knowledge so that I can become a very skilled engineer and progress as I continue with my career. As well as this, I feel that the JN Bentley employees as a whole are very friendly and have made me feel part of the team.
